VOLKSWAGEN GOLF - £10,000
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, Online Auction - 27th November on Thursday the 27th of November. Introduced in 1976, the Mk1 GTI combined the level-headed practicality of Volkswagen’s steadfast Golf with a level of performance and handling precision previously reserved for far more specialised machinery. The result was nothing short of transformative, widely regarded as the spark that ignited an entirely new motoring segment. At the heart of the GTI lay Volkswagen’s celebrated 1.6-litre fuel-injected four-cylinder engine, later expanded to 1.8 litres, delivering lively, eager power through a crisp five-speed manual gearbox. Weighing little more than a tonne, the Mk1 GTI offered remarkable agility—its light, communicative steering and neatly balanced chassis making it as delightful on a Sunday B-road as it was dependable on the weekday commute. Externally, the GTI distinguished itself with subtle confidence: the now-iconic red-pinstriped grille, patterned upholstery, and a purposeful stance that whispered performance rather than shouting it. It is precisely this blend of everyday usability and spirited capability that cemented the GTI’s reputation as a true driver’s car, establishing a template still followed by manufacturers today. Four decades on, the Mk1 GTI remains one of the most collectible modern classics: admired for its purity, its mechanical honesty, and the enduring charm of a machine that performs with both enthusiasm and restraint. A cornerstone of automotive history, it stands as a testament to Volkswagen’s inspired engineering and the enduring brilliance of the original hot hatch. First registered in 1983, this MK 1 has been owned by our vendor for the past 13 years, carefully and progressively restored, with extensive photographic documentation on file detailing the work carried out. Resprayed professionally in 2022 in its original factory Black and sitting on its correct Tarantula alloy wheels, it retains its authentic appearance, complemented by a charcoal and light grey striped cloth interior, believed to be original. The 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine was fully rebuilt in 2020 with new pistons and bearings, a reconditioned cylinder head, new oil pump, timing belt and water hoses, and has seen very little use since, completing less than 1,000 miles since. In 2023 the braking system benefited from new rear drums and a handbrake cable, with the remainder of the car remaining close to standard specification, still retaining its original VAG number plates. Accompanied by a strong history file including invoices, bills, VAG service book, original VAG plates, MOT Certificates and detailed records of restoration and maintenance. A well-sorted and highly usable Mk1 GTI, enjoying recent mechanical investment and smart presentation, ready to be enjoyed immediately with clear potential as a steadily appreciating modern classic.
