This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, Online Auction - 29th May on Thursday the 29th of May. Background: The Volkswagen Golf Clipper was a special edition of the final iterations of the Mk1 Golf Cabriolet, produced between 1988 and 1993. Sharing its 1.8-litre engine with the GTi models, the Clipper used a simpler carburettor setup resulting in 90bhp. Given its relatively light weight, the Clipper offered a lively and enjoyable driving experience, making it a fun option for open-top motoring enthusiasts Also notable for its body-coloured bumpers, flared wheel arches, and side skirts, collectively known as the 'Clipper kit'. These features gave the car a sportier appearance compared to standard models. Inside, the Clipper offered cloth upholstery and period-specific details such as a Sony radio/cassette player. Some models were equipped with an electrically powered convertible hood, which was a novel feature for compact convertibles at the time The car: First registered in 1989, this stylish Golf Clipper is finished in a striking Paprika Red, the car boasts a vibrant presence on the road. It appears to have received a respray at some point during its life, which has been carried out to a good standard and contributes to its impressive overall presentation. Complemented by a grey patterned interior, black manually operated hood, matching grill, and 15" BBS alloy wheels. The underside of the vehicle has been fully powder-coated to preserve its condition and quality. Powered by a 1.8-litre carburetted inline-four engine producing approximately 90bhp when new, it's paired with an optional automatic gearbox for a smooth driving experience. The car is supplied with its original handbooks and service book, as well as a history file containing numerous invoices. Notably, it underwent recommissioning in 2023 which included a timing belt replacement, new hoses and a carburettor base plate — details of which are shown in the accompanying photos. An oil and filter change were also carried out last year, although no invoice is on file for that service. Summary: Combining timeless design with dependable performance, this well presented Golf Clipper remains a desirable classic in today’s market.
