JAGUAR E-TYPE - £30,000
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, Online Auction - 10th July on Thursday the 10th of July. Background: The Jaguar E-Type - marketed as the XK-E in North America - stands as one of the most celebrated and influential sports cars ever built. Produced from 1961 to 1974 by Jaguar Cars Ltd, the E-Type was a marvel of design and engineering that redefined performance and elegance in a way few vehicles have since. With its long, flowing lines and aggressive stance, the E-Type captivated audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. But it wasn’t just a pretty face. Capable of a claimed 150mph top speed and a 0–60 mph sprint in under seven seconds, the E-Type backed up its looks with cutting-edge technology. It featured a largely unitary body structure, independent suspension at all four corners, disc brakes - including inboard-mounted rears - and rack-and-pinion steering. All of this was offered at a price point that undercut many rivals, forcing the automotive industry to rethink what a performance car could be. The second iteration, known as the Series 2, arrived with a host of changes - many driven by tightening U.S. safety regulations. Most noticeably, the signature glass headlight covers disappeared, a change applied globally despite being prompted by American mandates. Other alterations included a wraparound rear bumper, enlarged front indicators and repositioned taillights, a wider grille opening, and twin electric fans to improve cooling. Inside, the Series 2 introduced further U.S.-influenced updates: a steering column-mounted ignition switch with an integrated lock, a move away from metal toggle switches to plastic rocker switches, and a collapsible steering column for improved crash safety. The new seats also allowed for head restraints, meeting 1969 U.S. regulations. Mechanically, the Series 2 was marked by a more rugged appearance under the hood, with ribbed cam covers replacing the smooth polished finish of earlier models. U.S. versions were notably de-tuned, switching from triple SU carburetors to twin Strombergs and increasing valve clearances - resulting in a horsepower drop from 265 to 246 and torque down from 283 to 263. Air conditioning and power steering became available as factory options, offering added comfort to a car already brimming with performance pedigree. The Jaguar E-Type wasn’t just a car - it was a statement. And even decades later, it remains a benchmark of style, speed, and innovation. The Car: The Jaguar E-Type has long held a revered place in automotive history, and while all variants are coveted by collectors, the Series 2 has earned a reputation as the most usable classic of the lot. Retaining the seductive silhouette of its predecessors, the Series 2 brought meaningful updates - improved ergonomics, more refined interiors, and mechanical tweaks - that made it as suitable for long-distance touring as it was for the concours lawn. One such example, finished in a striking classic red, is now up for sale - offering a rare blend of pedigree, preservation, and practical enhancements. First registered on 28 January 1969, this fixed-head coupé is believed to be the fourth Series 2 off the production line that year, bearing chassis number 1R20131. Originally delivered in blue, the car was repainted in red in 1984 and has recently undergone a further respray to bring it to show-ready condition. Cherished by its current registered keeper for the past 18 years, this E-Type has seen only sparing use - just 1,941 miles logged on its most recent MOT, and 2,074 miles displayed on the odometer (likely 102,074 in total). Despite limited mileage, the car has been regularly serviced and maintained by specialists, most recently in April 2024 by Chariots Engineering of Clayhill. That service included attention to the brakes and clutch system, new tyres and tubes, and other essential maintenance. The car also underwent a comprehensive cosmetic refresh ahead of sale. New chrome wire wheels, a replacement front bumper, and light refurbishment of the black leather interior complement the already handsome presentation. The paintwork is in excellent condition with no visible signs of aging or wear, and the body panels - including the doors and bonnet - fit cleanly and evenly. Chrome trim and bumpers present well, while the glass lenses on exterior lights remain clear and damage-free. Inside, the cabin is equally well-kept. The black leather seats and carpets show only light signs of age, and the dash remains clean and fully functional. A period-correct wood-rimmed steering wheel and a modern Alpine stereo add a tasteful blend of vintage charm and modern convenience. Mechanically, the car retains its desirable triple SU carburettor setup and original 265bhp specification, ensuring it performs as Jaguar intended. It passed a voluntary MOT in April 2024 with no advisories, offering reassurance to potential buyers. The underside is reported to be in good structural condition, with no cause for concern flagged in inspections. With just ten registered keepers since new and accompanied by its original handbook, a folder of invoices, historic MOTs, and a photographic record of bodywork repairs dating back to 2006, this E-Type comes to market with both provenance and peace of mind. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or seeking a classic you can actually enjoy on the open road, this early Series 2 FHC offers an enticing blend of style, performance, and usability - making it a compelling entry into the world of true British motoring legends.
