On its introduction in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type was swiftly recognized as an outstanding design, boasting both stylish looks and excellent engineering. It has since been acclaimed as an icon of the motoring world and remains one of the most widely recognized and highly regarded classic cars on the planet. The first cars, which subsequently became known as Series 1 vehicles, were available as either a 2-seat Fixed Head Coupé or an Open 2-seater (‘Roadster’) model, powered by the 6-cylinder, 3.8 litre XK engine from the outgoing Jaguar XK150. In 1964 the engine size was increased to 4.2 litres and in 1966 a longer-wheelbase 2+2 Coupé model was introduced, together with an automatic transmission option. The Series 2 models were released in 1968, largely in response to vehicle legislation in the USA, requiring a number of safety-related changes which altered the appearance of the car. Revised bumpers, grille and lighting arrangements mostly, but the update also included power steering and air conditioning options. By the time the Series 3 was introduced in 1971, the model was 10 years old and Jaguar undertook more radical alterations. The car was offered only in long-wheelbase Coupé and convertible (Roadster) form, both of which now had flared wheel arches, an enlarged front grille and more chrome added. The biggest change however, was under the bonnet, where a new 5.3 litre V12 engine replaced the earlier 6 cylinder motor. The new powerplant added an element of sophistication, making the E-Type even more of a Grand Tourer. The Series 3 Roadster offered here was first registered in July 1974 and appears to have spent much of its early life in and around the London area. Whilst we don’t have a complete history, the sizeable file accompanying the E-Type does contain MOT certificates ranging from 1977 to 2014 which confirm the recorded mileage to be genuine, with only a couple of thousand miles subsequently added following a change of ownership and the car’s import and re-registration in Jersey in 2015. The records we have show that significant mechanical renovation work took place in 2000 – to both the running gear and the engine and its ancillaries. On moving to Jersey, the car received regular attention and maintenance – including the fitment of a full stainless steel exhaust system – but following a period of little use recently, it is currently receiving some light re-commissioning work to ensure it runs and drives just well as it should and in keeping with its good looks. We don’t have a record of any major bodywork restoration or repainting work having been carried out but given the very good condition of the body and paint finish, feel this must have been addressed at some point in not so distant past. The underside is solid, clean and has been extensively undersealed. In 2014 a new hood was fitted and in 2015, a new windscreen. The car sits on chrome wire wheels and all brightwork is present and in good condition. The interior of the E-Type looks original and does show some signs of wear. The car is sold together with a full interior restoration kit – which includes seat base foams, but not new leather seat coverings - purchased a few years ago but not yet fitted, the previous owner preferring the patinated look. A wood-rimmed steering wheel compliments the dashboard, which is complete and in good condition. A modern, classic style radio/audio unit has been fitted. This is a very tidy, smart and usable low mileage example of the last of the E-Type series, sporting the most sophisticated powerplant fitted to the model. It runs and drives as it should and simply needs a new owner to enjoy it and make good use of it. The car is currently Jersey registered and the local registration plate is not included in the asking price but might be available, subject to separate negotiation. We can assist with shipping (worldwide) and importation processes if required.
