1917 ALLEN TYPE 37 - £11,850
Rugged and reliable vintage American car in running condition. Allen cars were produced from 1913-21 in Fostoria, Ohio. The company gained as good reputation and produced over 20,000 cars before they were bought out by Willys who made similar cars. This model with a 3620cc engine of 37hp is one of 8 cars known to survive and was imported into the UK in 2022. It was owned by a garage proprietor in Cranleigh who started the engine but the brakes and wheels were in poor condition. The present owner has refurbished the mechanics including rebuilding the carburettor, upgraded the electrics to 12v, adjusted the clutch cone, strengthening the wooded wheels etc so that the car now starts and runs reasonably well. It is essentially as built in 1917 except for the heavy wooden dashboard replacement many years ago. It is believed the paint is original too. The lighting electrics and added indicators are work in hand. The car is rugged, like an old tractor, with a powerful engine and it starts and runs well enough for short journeys. A real piece of history that deserves more than just a resting place in a museum. Unlike its competitor, the Ford model T, it has the same controls as a modern car with the clutch, brake and accelerator in the normal places. The present owner has worked on the car as a labour of love for over a year or so. It comes with much history of the Allen cars including an original advert and a copied instruction manual. There is correspondence with a member of the Allen car family and some spares are still available. A short video of the car running is available.
