Introduced at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the boldly named LaFerrari, translated as “The Ferrari,” was described by company president Luca Di Montezemolo as “…the expression of what defines our company.” Following in the hallowed lineage of the 288 GTO, F40, F50, and Enzo, the LaFerrari’s striking design and breathtaking performance has caused it to be celebrated since its inception. Fittingly, the world’s reverence for this sublime model has not diminished over the past decade.
The LaFerrari is built around a competition-worthy, arrowhead-shaped carbon-fiber tub structure, and as such, the model benefits from a lower ride height and center of gravity than even the radical Enzo. The car’s F1 cockpit-style seating position even features sills built into the front-hinged, scissor-type doors, while leather and Alcantara seating surfaces are mounted directly to the floor and rear firewall. Accordingly, the pedals are adjustable, and the seat custom-padded for each individual buyer. Breaking from tradition, the LaFerrari’s high-tech chassis is clothed in evocative bodywork styled by an in-house design team headed by Flavio Manzoni and constructed from carbon-fiber composite. LaFerrari coupe production was limited to just 499 units worldwide (one additional coupe was ultimately built and auctioned for charity, making for an even 500).
The heart of LaFerrari is a mid-rear-mounted, 6.3-liter V-12 engine directly lifted from the developmental FXX model. With an absurd compression ratio of 13.5:1, the V-12 developed 789 horsepower, redlining at a whopping 9,250 rpm. The 516 pound-feet of torque arrive relatively high, just shy of 7,000 rpm. An electric motor derived from the company’s Formula One Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) was installed in the rear, adding 161 horsepower, greatly improving response and acceleration at lower rpms. Power was routed directly to the rear axle alone, while a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle managed gear changes.
In total, the two powertrains combined for a head-spinning 949 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque, propelling the slippery LaFerrari to 60 mph from a standstill in as little as 2.4 seconds. The quarter mile arrived in 9.7 seconds at 149.2 mph, besting both the Bugatti Veyron and the Porsche 918. “It’s closer to driving an LMP car than, say, a 458 Speciale,” Road & Track writer Larry Webster observed after testing the LaFerrari.
Electronically deployed active aerodynamic elements, including “smart” front and rear undercarriage panels and a rear spoiler continuously attenuate downforce from between 200 and 800 pounds to maintain the car’s traction and composure at any speed. Mammoth cross-drilled and vented Brembo carbon-ceramic disc brakes and proprietary Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires complete the technical profile, keeping the LaFerrari grounded through screaming switchbacks.
The Dare to Dream Collection’s stunning Rosso Corsa over Pelle Neri LaFerrari was delivered new to a marque VIP via Ferrari of Alberta during May 2015, and promptly registered in that province as “LHY 141.” This example’s breathtaking suite of desirable specifications includes a prominent set of Scuderia fender shields, black wheels housing red carbon ceramic brake calipers, exposed carbon fiber exterior trim, and interior piping furnished in Pelle Rossi leather. Upon receipt, the car’s original owner immediately had the entire body (and exposed carbon footwells) done up with a clear protective film which is reported to have cost him over CAD$7,000.
Following 10 months and approximately 1,000 kilometers (~620 miles) of use with its original owner, this LaFerrari was purchased by the Dare to Dream Collection.
