Following World War II, it is no surprise trucks were among the first fresh automotive designs to hit the market, answering the growing demand for new workhorses in the booming post-war American economy. First out of the gate was Chevrolet with their new line of pickup trucks debuting in mid-1947, replacing the revered Art Deco designs which had carried the torch in the first years following resumption of civilian automotive production. Crowned the “Advance Design” series, these new trucks were billed as “bigger, stronger, and sleeker” than their precedents.
With renewed focus on comfort and convenience, Chevrolet described their new cab design as “Unisteel Battleship” construction with extra wide doors swinging open on concealed hinges and extending down as covers for the sills. The glass area grew considerably with a wider windshield, side windows, and backlight, along with optional cabin corner windows creating the revered “five-window” design. Chevrolet called the result "Observation Car Vision."
Produced in Chevrolet’s Los Angeles, California factory, this Advance Design 3100 Pickup wears a charming, very well-preserved restoration in Royal Blue over gray vinyl interior trim. Along with its coveted five-window cabin design, the truck features numerous period touches including white wall tires, amber fog lamps, and extensive chrome finishes including the bumpers, grille, hood ornament, and side view mirror, along with wheel trim rings and hubcaps. Under the hood in the tidy engine bay is a 235-cubic-inch “Thriftmaster” inline six-cylinder engine drives power to the rear wheels via a three-speed column-shifted transmission. The truck’s wooden bed floor wears a natural finish with polished stainless-steel rails and is equipped with desirable wooden stake sides, likewise in a natural finish.
The Advance Design series of Chevrolet pickup truck is a mainstay of post-war culture.
