This third-generation 5 Series was built from 1987 to 1996, and during its nine-year career, it found favour among enthusiasts. BMW even managed to win numerous awards for the E34’s design. In 1981, under the supervision of Claus Luthe, head of the design department at BMW, work began on a successor to the then newly released E28. A design that took six years to make, though that certainly shows. The E34 boasted a precisely balanced weight distribution front and rear. It came standard with central locking, power steering, and electric seats. Many other features were also available on the extensive options list, catering to ‘a car for everyone’ offer. This offer is further reinforced by the introduction of a wagon version alongside the regular sedan, as well as a variety of engines for the E34, ranging from a 1.8-litre straight-four engine to a four-litre V8, and everything in between, including even diesel engines. BMW M also enters the stage from the get-go on with a high-performance M5, initially offering 311 horsepower, which later increased to 335 horsepower. After having had several facelifts, the E34 was succeeded in 1995 by the more modern E39. More than 1.3 million E34 models were sold.
