1968 TRIUMPH TR5 PI SPORTS - £46,995

The Triumph TR5 was built by the Triumph Motor Company in Coventry between August 1967 and September 1968 with only 2,947 cars produced in total - the first car being assembled on 29 August 1967 and the last on 19 September 1968. Of these, 1,161 were destined for the UK market, the remainder being LHD cars which went to Europe. Externally, it's barely discernible to the Giovanni Michelotti styled Triumph TR4, but TR5 hid the main difference under the bonnet! The TR4 had a 2138cc 4 cylinder engine with twin Stromberg carburettors producing 104bhp, but the Triumph TR5 boasted a 2.5 litre Straight 6 fuel injected engine developing around 150 bhp (112 kW) and this engine turned the TR5 into a genuine performance car. At the time, fuel injection was uncommon in standard road cars and so much so that Triumph claimed in their sales brochure that it was the 'First British production sports car with petrol injection'. This engine could propel the TR5 from 0 to 50 mph (80 km/h) in just 6.5 seconds, and on to a top speed of 125 mph (201 km/h). Standard equipment included front disc brakes, independent rear suspension, rack and pinion steering and a four speed gearbox. The available optional extras included overdrive, wire wheels and a hard top with detachable roof panel - known as the 'Surrey Top' and in 1968, the basic price of the TR5 in the UK was £1,260 including taxes, with wire wheels being another £38, overdrive £60 and a tonneau cover another £13. So much more than a stopgap between the TR4 & TR6, the short-lived Triumph TR5 is now arguably the most sought-after model in the TR range. ONLY ONE PREVIOUS OWNER AND 64,866 MILES FROM NEW This Triumph TR5 Pi - Chassis No: CP2192 and Engine No: CP2192 is a 'Matching Numbers' car and was sold new to a Mr Albert De Sousa in Forest Hill, London SE23 and first registered on 23rd May 1968. After almost 20 years of ownership in 1986, Mr Sousa enlisted Triumph specialist TR Sports Cars in Mitchum, Surrey to carry out a full 'body-off' chassis restoration of the car and he also had the colour changed from its original Triumph White to Signal Red. The restoration took 2 years and all invoices for the works are contained in the history file and the full cost of this restoration came to just over £10,500, which was quite a substantial sum back in 1988. Finished in Signal Red with its original Black Seats and interior, Walnut Dashboard, Black Leather Mota-Lita Steering Wheel, Chrome Wire Wheels, Surrey Top with both Hard and Soft panels, Bosch Fuel Pump conversion, Kenlowe Electric Cooling Fan and its original 2.5 litre Straight Six Fuel injected Engine and 4 Speed Manual Gearbox. After these works, the car was maintained and serviced for Mr De Sousa by Cox & Buckles Workshops in Wimbledon and TR specialist Enginuity in London, and after 37 years of ownership in 2005, he decided it was time to sell it and let someone else enjoy the car, so he gave it to us to sell for him. We sold it in September 2005 to a Frenchman who was working in London at the time and the mileage then was a genuine 62,715 miles from new and he paid the princely sum £16,995 - a copy of our Screen Description from 2005 is shown in the photographs. The car was eventually taken back to his home in France a year or so later and it was registered in France, but it was not officially exported from the UK as it still retains its UK registration number HST 201F and is still recorded on the DVLA database. During his ownership of 19 years, it was only driven occasionally, as he has spent much of his time working in the USA, and he only drove the car when returning to France for holidays, so it has only covered a further 2,121 miles since 2005 and now a genuine 64,866 miles from new. As he is now working and living permanently in the USA, he sent the car over to us from France to sell for him late last year, but unfortunately a few cosmetic paint issues had arisen since he bought it and we have therefore just completed a re-commissioning of the car in conjunction with Triumph TR specialists 'Enginuity' in Acton, who had previously worked on the car for the first owner. Works included a cosmetic repaint of the car + some mechanical repairs, a full service/tuning and a new MOT which they did on 22nd July 2025 and with No Advisories. We have just literally just collected the car from them and full set of photographs and a video will follow upon completion of our showroom preparation. This is a superb low mileage and low ownership car in beautiful condition and it needs to be seen and driven to be appreciated. Upon sale the car will come with our own customer care package including a 55-point pre-delivery inspection and 6 months mechanical breakdown Parts & Labour Warranty which can be upgraded and extended at additional cost if required. Naturally, the car has Historic Vehicle status and is therefore Road Tax Free, MOT exempt and ULEZ compliant. Car now available to view @ our showrooms in Mortlake, South West London. NB: The photographs shown are all from September 2005 when we sold the car to the current owner but with the exception of the one photograph with the French number plates fitted and the recent ones from Enginuity's spray booth.
