1947 TRIUMPH ROADSTER - £Auction
Vendor states. A striking Triumph Roadster, renowned for its distinctive appearance and presence. This example is in good condition, with 81,000 miles recorded. It has been in the current ownership since 1965, following the owner’s previous experience with three other Roadsters. The vehicle was originally purchased from a Triumph dealership in Bexleyheath, London. A year prior to its acquisition, the car was upgraded by the dealer with a TR3 engine, a floor-change gearbox, and SU carburettors—enhancements that significantly improved its performance and influenced the owner's decision to purchase. Additional features include extra chrome detailing on various tools, such as the starting handle, hand pump, grease gun, and wheel brace. The vehicle also retains its rear Dicky seats, providing seating for up to five passengers. The interior is finished in black leather with red carpeting. Approximately eight years ago, all tyres—including the spare—were replaced with radial tyres to enhance road handling. In the early 1970s, this Triumph Roadster was awarded first place at the Triumph Roadster Club Annual Concours for four consecutive years. Following this remarkable achievement, the owner was invited to serve as a judge for the competition to allow other enthusiasts a fair opportunity to compete. Over the years, the Roadster has also secured numerous awards at local car rallies and shows, frequently taking first place. The vehicle has also enjoyed some time in the spotlight. It featured in two advertisements during the 1970s: the first promoting the newly released TR77, filmed in North London; and the second as part of a campaign promoting London and Britain to American audiences. In the latter, the owner was filmed polishing the Roadster outside a Mews house in Chelsea, alongside scenes featuring a London taxi and red London bus. The Roadster has been a companion on many European adventures. In the 1960s, the owner and his wife, along with friends in their own Roadsters, toured to Elba, an Italian island. Additional touring holidays have included trips through Scotland as well as Triumph Roadster rallies across Holland and France. It has also played a special role in family life, serving as the wedding car for both of the owner's daughters and for various friends and relatives over the years. Although it has seen limited use in the past decade, it remains a familiar and much-loved presence in the local village community. The Triumph Roadster stands out not only for its rarity and character but also for its cultural recognition, having gained widespread familiarity as the iconic vehicle driven in the television series Bergerac.
