1996 STEVENS CIPHER COUPE MITSUBISHI PROTON CONCEPT - £Auction
Designed by Tony Stevens in the late 70s and shown at the British Motor show in 1980 the Cipher was a design that Professor Stevens was later approached by a Consortium from Malaysia in 1995 to be produced by Proton. Their intention for it to be produced as part of a range of cars to be manufactured in Malaysia for World markets. Clearly the intention was that the cars would be produced by Proton which meant that the car had to be designed to use the Mitsubishi assemblies down the Proton lines. In mid 1996 the Malaysian economy crashed and the consortium dissolved meaning Professor Stevens was left with a factory with prototypes in various stages of build The Coupe was the most complete model so he completed the build and scrapped the rest. Running gear - Mitsubishi 1.8 16 valve, all parts apart from body and chassis are Mitsubishi Colt 1.8 and Proton Satria which was used as a donor car. Registration number in some pictures is from a Proton Satria donor. The car was never road registered in UK and only used for 1,900 miles of basic road testing.
