Ever since it was first unveiled to delighted crowds at the 1963 Frankfurt International Motor Show, the Porsche 911 has commanded enthusiasts’ attention. The model was not only beautiful to look at and exquisitely well made, but it was also hugely entertaining to drive. By the mid-1970s, however, the original 911 was overdue an update, which it duly received in 1974 with the introduction of the revised G-Series.

Prompted largely by US safety legislation, the new G-Series 911 received raised impact absorbing bumpers––hydraulically dampened for US models––flanked by easily identifiable plastic “bellows”. Contrary to its position in the 911 range today, in the mid-1970s the Carrera represented the top of the range. Ever since the lightweight homologation 2.7 RS model had sent off the original 911 in considerable style, the Carrera moniker had come to signify the pinnacle of the 911 range––at least until production of the Turbo model began in 1975.

The Carrera 2.7 had quite a lot in common with its immediate RS predecessor. Rear arches were similarly extended (21 millimetres each side) to accommodate wider rubber, while the Type 911/83 engine used in the Carrera 2.7 was also built to RS specification, producing 210 horsepower via the same Bosch mechanical fuel injection system (earning the model its “MFI” nickname among enthusiasts). Buyers could even specify the Carrera 2.7 with the iconic “ducktail” rear spoiler of the RS. The 2,687-cc flat-six engine, when new, allowed it to breach the 100 km/h barrier in just 6.3 seconds.

Accompanying correspondence from Porsche confirms this car’s original specification and colourway of Grand Prix White over blue and black imitation leather. Complementary Porsche documentation––signed by Porsche Italy’s aftersales director––indicates that this 911 Carrera Coupé was built to 1974 model specification in September 1973, making it an early production example, construction of the 2.7 Carrera having started just a month prior. The Porsche was delivered new to Verona and remained in Italy until now, as is chronicled by the accompanying Estratto Cronologico documents (available to view on file). Factory data from Porsche confirms that this car retains its matching-numbers engine.

The Porsche has been kept in fine mechanical fettle by its consigning owner, with much of the work carried out by Centro Porsche Torino backed up by extensive workshop invoices available to view on file. The engine was rebuilt by the Porsche main dealer in 2015, while the car has received renewed brakes and clutch, and the 911 wears four new Pirelli tyres fitted in March 2024. Cosmetically, the car benefits from a renewed interior and repainted exterior completed in the care of the seller.

With rarity, subtly, and blistering performance––not to mention its fine condition––this 911 would make a fantastic addition to any serious collection.
