1932 MORRIS COMMERCIAL T2 DROPSIDE LORRY - £11,995

This wonderful 93-year-old Morris Commercial has come to us from one of our long-term customers who rebuilt this rare lorry, a regular attender at local shows and rallies since 2011. The comprehensive rebuild included the construction of a brand new dropside body with tilt cover. The woodwork in the cab is particularly well done, and the paintwork is lovely. Morris Motors had bought a factory in 1923 previously belonging to E G Wrigley Ltd, component suppliers to Morris, and this allowed the company to expand into the heavier commercial vehicle market. Morris Commercial Cars Ltd was formed, and this new division introduced its first model, the one-ton T-type, in May 1924. Like the Morris van range, the T-type was based mainly on passenger car components, including the Morris Oxford's Hotchkiss-type 13.9hp four-cylinder sidevalve engine. This engine of 1802cc capacity had its origins in the original bullnose Morris of 1913. Brakes were fitted to the rear wheels only, regarded as adequate for the vehicle's typical speed of 30mph. The T-Type could be ordered either with Morris's own coachwork or in rolling chassis form for independent coachbuilders. The earliest T-types had the name ‘Morris' cast into the radiator shell. This later model has the larger radiator with chrome-plated shell, introduced in 1931, when it became known as the ‘T2'. A fascinating fitted accessory in the cab is the ‘Servis Recorder' - a mechanical tachograph-like device fitted to many lorries in the 1930s. Introduced as a direct response to the 1930 Road Traffic Act, the unit recorded driving hours, speed and distance travelled. Initially, driver's hours were limited to 11 hours driving in a 24hr period, and this unit allowed operators to demonstrate compliance. This is a charming old lorry which would be ideal for use as a promotional vehicle or just used for local shows and rallies.
