MUF 980 was first registered on the 26th June 1953 in Brighton, Sussex and is of the more scarce, UK Home Market cars. Almost 30,000 MG TD’s were built, around 25,000 were exported to the USA so these UK models are becoming very desirable. This stunning example headed north to Scotland during the 1960’s and it stayed with one owner in Kilmarnock from at least 1967 to 2003. A letter from the owner of over 30 years is on file confirming he bought the TD from a mechanic in the 1960’s who had taken the TD down to the bare chassis. The long-term owner then spent four years finishing the rebuild. The engine was rebuilt and during his ownership only required oil changes. The letter finishes with confirmation that the MG had toured all over Scotland during his long-term ownership. During the late 1990's the MG's long term enthusiast owner rebuilt the TD once again, a photographic record accompanies the impressive history file that also includes MOT certificates dating back to the 1980's. In 2008 the MG came into the hands of an owner known to us based near Halifax in West Yorkshire. During his thirteen years of ownership the MG was regularly toured and covered 2500 miles. The Across ownership the car had extensive general servicing and maintenance but the headline work was an engine rebuild in 2015, new ring gear and clutch, rebuilt unleaded cylinder head, carburettors rebuilt, distributor and dynamo rebuilt, new Vredestein tyres, new carpet set and in 2019 the front suspension was overhauled and fitted with new poly bushes and all metal parts were blasted and powder coated. The rear dampers were also modified from lever arm to telescopic which transform the handling. To further improve the driving performance of this TD, it has a high ratio rear axle ensuring the car has a comfortable cruising speed of 70mph. The later MGA rear axle hugely enhances the drivability and the 1250cc XPAG engine is lively, has ample power and is a delightful cruiser at 10% lower RPM than with a standard rear axle. The TD came to us in 2021 and we supplied the car to a long term client of ours, a retired engineer based in North Yorkshire. During four years of ownership he has detailed the car beautifully, and taken it onto the next level with around £7500 of expenditure and 4000 faultless miles of touring for various events around the UK. The TD was driven from Yorkshire to Gaydon, Lincoln, Stratford, Suffolk, Norfolk and Scotland, always proving completely reliable and wonderful on the road. This is a car that could set off to the South of France tomorrow. Improvements over the past four years include a smaller steering wheel (original with the car), new hood frame, Aluminium rocker cover and side plates, spin on oil filter, new propshaft, upgraded brakes, new Michelin tyres, new coolant hoses, various zinc plates and stainless steel dome nuts plus a high level of detailing , particularly under the bonnet which looks truly magnificent. The MG was brought over to us from Crayke and the drive is excellent, the suspension upgrade is another superb improvement and with excellent brakes and precise rack and pinion steering the MG really is an impressive car on the road. Working syncromesh is evident on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears and the car is ready to go. The MG features full weather equipment and cosmetically is beautifully presented with excellent bodywork, stunning gleaming paintwork and chrome, a lovely upholstery and detailed, show quality engine bay. The underside and chassis are first class, and with its excellent cruising ability, UK provenance and history, this really is a fantastic buy.
