Introduced in 1959, the Mercedes Benz W111 was an update from the 220 Pontoon. Featuring modern engineering, such as – All Independent Suspension and a 2.2 Six Cylinder Engine. The car featured larger bodywork compared to its predecessor and saw fins on top the wings to compare it to its American rivals. Only 14,173 220 SEB Coupes were built between 1961 & 1965 before production came to an end. This beautiful example we have here is a a 1965 UK car. It has a very interesting history being owned the second owner, a Mr Anthony Ingram from Harrogate Yorkshire, for 36 years, when it was purchased in 1966 from original owner, Motor & Plant in Peterborough. It comes with its original Green Log Book, which is in excellent condition. It is also refreshing to see its original registration number plate ‘BFL 220C’ still on the car. Finished in Dark Blue paint and Grey trim, the car is surrounded by sumptuous amounts of chrome to finish it off, which is the original set. Bought in 2002 by Ian Keers, who was then the Chairman of the Mercedes Benz Owners Club. Mr Keers spent the next five years bringing ‘BFL 220C’ back to its original condition, after the car had seen many miles added to its life. It was in need of a restoration. The engine was fully rebuilt by specialists using 100% Mercedes Benz parts and the rear axle was stripped and rebuilt because of an oil leak. The mileage at this time 176,000 miles. It has since then only covered a further 12,000 miles and has only been used in good weather. The interior was subjected to an overhaul, with the dashboard stripped and sent away to specialists in Spalding, new correct carpets fitted and the seat leather renovated to bring it back to life. The car was used a few European trips and features in the Mercedes Benz ‘Gazette’ magazine a couple of times. These copies will be found in the huge history files. Originally more expensive than an E-type which cost around £2000, the 220 SEB was £6000 and was seen as a luxury Coupe with engineering far ahead of its time. This example is a rare RHD, Manual, that is lovely to drive and would eat miles (or KM) on a long journey. ‘BFL 220C’ comes with a substantial box filled with history files that contain everything from invoices, original handbooks, workshop manuals and log books. There are also 2 CD’s that are filled with photographic records of restoration. More images will be added after showroom preparation has been finished.
