After Jaguar’s utter dominance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans throughout the 1950s, the engineers at Coventry were tasked with developing a production version of their champion race cars. The new car would borrow heavily from the venerated D-Type, winner of Le Mans a stunning three consecutive times from 1955–1957. The engineers would also keep the D-Type’s monocoque construction. Revolutionary in its day, the aeronautically inspired design consisted of a front subframe carrying the engine, front suspension, and steering assembly bolted directly to the body tub. This new design not only significantly lightened the car, but also lowered its center of gravity for excellent cornering. Rear suspension was now fully independent, using jointed axles as upper links and tubular lower links, with twin coil springs and shocks on each side.

Completed in the first month of 4.2-liter production, this 1965 Jaguar E-Type Roadster left the factory bound for the United States in October 1964. The exterior originally featured Opalescent Maroon paint with a Black interior, according to the Jaguar Heritage Trust Production Record Trace certificate on file.

Now finished in a classic scheme of British Racing Green over a cognac leather interior, this Jaguar was the recipient of a concours-quality rotisserie restoration in 2009. Photos from this project confirm the E-Type was completely disassembled, refinished, and reassembled to an incredibly high standard. As such, this handsome coupe shows in spectacular condition to this day. In 2013, the Jaguar entered the Dare to Dream Collection and, an invoice on file shows the carburetors were rebuilt in 2019. At the same time, the electrical system was also serviced.

The E-Type is considered by many to be one of those rare gifts to the automotive world, offering the enthusiast thrilling performance and jaw-dropping good looks. This attractive and expertly restored Jaguar is poised for a new adventure, be it club events or enjoyable touring among other distinguished automobiles. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/dd24.
