Lot details

Make: Hooded Gig Horse Carriage

The early gig horse carriages were simple, lightweight, and designed for individual or small group travel, commonly drawn by a single horse. Originating in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, these carriages were characterised by their open, two-wheeled structure, which allowed for easier manoeuvrability compared to larger, more cumbersome carriages. They were often used for short trips, like town errands or leisurely outings, as well as for carrying a single passenger or a couple. The gig became popular due to its practicality, relatively low cost, and the ease with which it could be driven by a single person, making it a common choice for the middle class and rural communities. Over time, gig carriages evolved in design, offering variations that suited different needs, including those with a more enclosed body for additional comfort.

Believed to be a Victorian style hooded gig horse carriage. We are informed that this example has been a feature of period television series. In need of light reconditioning, the seat requires re-upholstering and the right hand wood shaft requires mending or replacing. Consigned by Mark Perkins.
