With the Paris-Dakar rally at its peak in the mid-1980s, manufacturers were eager to capitalise on the popularity of endurance racing with rugged, rally-inspired 'race-replica' machines. Honda answered the call with the acclaimed XL600R and XL600LM Paris-Dakar bikes What we have here, however, is an even rarer machine: the XL600R Pharaoh. Produced exclusively for the Japanese market, this special edition was released in limited numbers - just 300 examples left the factory - making it a highly sought after collectors' piece today Finished in a unique 'Marlboro'-like livery, but without actual Marlboro branding and sporting twin headlamps, the bike had bold styling and quickly achieved a strong following Fitted with gold anodised rims with matching Pro-Link suspension and bristling with high tech spec, including its radial four-valve head and a sophisticated induction system using two out of phase carbs on conical inatake tracts of different diameters. In addition, it had the all important electric start added, whilst retaining the traditional kick-start This low-mileage example is essentially original and benefits from a sympathetic, light restoration which has maintained its originiality, yet retains a gentle patina. The bike has been stripped and the frame repainted, along with the engine, but the rest of the bike is all original, including the tank paintwork, the seat - which has no rips or damage to the original plastics.
