FORD PUMA - £16,000

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, Online Auction - 11th September on Thursday the 11th of September. Background: First shown to the public at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show as the Puma ST160 Concept, the Ford Racing Puma was presented as more than just a styling exercise. Ford emphasised that the car represented a direct transfer of knowledge and technology from its Puma race and rally programmes to a production model. Development was led by Ford’s rally specialists at Boreham, with final conversions completed by Tickford in Daventry. Production was originally planned for 1,000 examples, with 500 allocated to the German market and 500 for the UK. In the end only 500 were built, all for British buyers. Each car carried its own number engraved on the inlet manifold, a reminder of its exclusivity. Although critically praised, sales were disappointing. With a price tag of £23,000, the Racing Puma struggled against rivals that offered more power and stronger credentials at lower cost. Ford also produced a dedicated Puma kit car that was designed specifically for rallying. Hoping to boost the sales of the Racing, the kit car saw success in both the 1,300cc and 1,600cc class. The Car: This particular car is offered in remarkable condition, having covered just 65,000 miles and having been subject to a huge recent restoration. The engine and gearbox are freshly rebuilt while the rest of the drivetrain, suspension and brakes have all been subject to a large overhaul. Cosmetically the car is in near perfect condition on the exterior, with no notable blemishes or imperfections in the paint work. This trend continues around the car with the wheels being in perfect condition, as well as the front splitter, wing mirrors any other notable high wearing areas externally. The only notable absence in the rear towing eye cover which can be seen in the gallery. With the interior of the car continues with the incredible condition throughout with little to no wear on the high traffic areas, notably the seat bolsters, steering wheel and gear knob. All the switch gear is in functioning order and plastics such as door cards and dash also all remain in a fantastic condition. To drive the car feels brand new as most of it is. Engine is exceptional and pulls well through all the gears, while the handling and ride are exceptional as the car was originally praised for. If you’re looking for that missing piece of your homologation special or Ford collection, this example certainly ticks all the boxes and would happily stand in its proud place in any collection.
