FORD ESCORT 1ST GEN - £40,000
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, Online Auction - 15th January on Thursday the 15th of January, Online. Background: The Escort RS2000 was the last car to be introduced to Ford's Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) range in June of 1973 and dovetailed nicely with its performance almost comparable to the more complex RS1600, but with the reliability and ease of maintenance of the Mexico. The car used the same Type 49 bodyshell as the Mexico and RS1600, however there was a new engine in use at Ford, the 2-litre overhead cam, 100bhp, Pinto design, which seemed, on paper, ideal for the RS. Ford then had the major problem of persuading the less than slender Pinto engine to fit into the engine bay, which was something it had never been designed to do. The only way of achieving this was by discarding the engine-driven cooling fan and replacing it with a thermostatically controlled Kenlowe unit. The most appropriate gearbox was the German 'E-box', which was totally different to the one fitted to the RS1600 and the final drive was 3.54:1. The car was launched in England on 11th November 1973 priced at £1,586. The RS2000 once again proved to be a quick and delightful car to drive, whilst being more accessible to buy and still offering customers a great choice in terms of colours and options. Developed by Ford’s Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) division, the Mk1 Escort RS2000 was introduced as a performance road car with real motorsport potential. Featuring a 2-litre Pinto engine, unique styling cues and suspension derived from Ford’s rally efforts, the RS2000 quickly built a reputation as one of the most rewarding drivers’ cars of its era. With a light footprint and simple mechanicals, it became a staple of both fast road driving and grassroots competition – and remains highly regarded by enthusiasts today. The Car: The car remains close to factory specification with no known performance modifications and overall finish reflect the quality of its previous restoration, while the condition of the interior, paintwork, and brightwork supports its high-level credentials. Although it hasn’t been campaigned in recent shows, only minimal preparation would be required for future concours participation. Inside, the car remains faithful to its factory specification, with the seats professionally refurbished using original Ford Beta cloth. New carpets have been fitted, and the headlining and door cards present in excellent condition. Mechanically the car is superb, it runs and drives very well, it’s a matching numbers car with the engine believed to have been rebuilt when the rest of the car was done, this was all carried out by the previous owner, since the change of owner ship, it had a full check over by a specialised garage and a fairly recent brake system overhaul. Overall, this is a great chance to own a cult classic from one of the industry’s greatest names, this RS2000 is ready to be driven and enjoyed and is a worthy candidate for any enthusiast or collector.
