Introduced at the Paris Salon in 1967, the 365 GT 2+2 continued Ferrari’s tradition of 2+2 grand touring machines, becoming Maranello’s largest and most luxurious model to date. The 365’s coachwork—designed and constructed by Pininfarina—featured low-slung fastback styling that drew heavily from the 500 Superfast and 365 California models.

The latest 2+2 was the first Ferrari grand tourer that was equipped as standard with power amenities (steering, brakes, and windows) and a self-leveling independent rear suspension. The 365’s luxurious interior was appointed with plush leather upholstery, elegant veneered trim panels, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel, which in combination with air conditioning and a radio made the model as comfortable as it was powerful. Of course, trademark Ferrari power would never take a backseat to creature comforts, and in this final iteration of the single-overhead-camshaft 4.4-litre “Colombo” engine, triple-Weber 40 DFI/5 carburetors contributed to a robust output of 320 horsepower.

Given the 365 GT 2+2’s sublime combination of power and luxury, it is little wonder that the model came to be known among some enthusiasts as the “Queen Mary”, a suggestion of the car’s sheer size and aristocratic presence.

This unrestored example claims rare factory-appointed mechanical features and cosmetic finishing, offering an ideal template for a full restoration. Chassis 13171 bears the unusual distinction of being the fifth of only six examples that were factory-equipped with an automatic transmission. Finished in rare Giallo Man O’War paint over an interior trimmed in Nero vaumol leather by Connolly, the 2+2 was distributed in May 1970 to Luigi Chinetti Motors, which later that year sold the car to a Mr. W. Taylor.

Although the 365’s intermediary history is not documented, in late-2007 it was offered by an esteemed dealer in the Los Angeles area, at which time the car was acquired by the consignor, a respected collector based in the Middle East. The 2+2 has remained in storage since then, and it now emerges to offer a tantalizing restoration prospect.

As one of only six examples factory-equipped with an automatic transmission, and originally finished in the rare Giallo Man O’War, this 365 GT 2+2 offers an incredible opportunity for any enthusiast seeking to steward the full restoration of a very intriguing Ferrari. Given a proper refurbishment, this fascinating car should make an ideal candidate for concours display or enjoyment on the open road for a whole family of tifosi.
