1977 FERRARI 308 GTB VETRORESINA - €169,950
This EU Ferrari 308 Vetroresina was built in 1976 and has an uninterrupted original first (!) license plate registration and the associated authentic first papers. A copy of part 3 behind the windshield and the last MOT sticker on the original old license plate also testify to a piece of uniquely preserved history. This matching numbers Ferrari was delivered new by Kroymans Ferrari and even still has the original dealer tag on the back. Along a production number of approximately 150 LHD Vetroresinas with the race bread dry sump system (quote: Routte Classiche It.) Every surviving copy can now be called a rarity. The option of air conditioning was almost standard in this first series because Ferrari wanted to enthuse the public with luxury gadgets. That is also our experience with this series. That is why we are surprised with this Vetroresina, which is an exception to the rule that it originally left the factory without this option. We do not know what the reason was for this option. On many Vetroresinas, these “clunky” systems were subsequently removed for sporting purposes because it saved about 30 kg (!) of sprung weight. The first owner of this unique Ferrari was clearly more interested in handling than luxury, which was reflected in this rare factory version. For the appreciation of a Vetroresina par excellence, we can only agree that the weight and the dry sump engine configuration determine the characteristics. Because of this originally missing option, this EU Vetroresina is also the lightest and purest experience of the entire formal 308-328 range. The original cover plate instead of a radio matches. The last owner, a well-known artist with professional technical knowledge and decades of experience with Vetroresinas, has chosen to spare no expense on what he deemed necessary to preserve this unique Ferrari in an original condition that is rarely found. To avoid irreversible consequences, he has consistently avoided traditional paths and views on restoration. On the other hand, expert attention has been paid to the underlying and technical quality with an eye for originality and sustainable preservation for the future, resulting in a Ferrari that has been awakened from a deep sleep that has lost nothing of authenticity and convinces subcutaneously in a surprisingly transparent way. The quality of the light, thin Scaglietti bodywork was certainly above average at the time. However, slight curves due to temperature changes have proven to be unavoidable over the years. This meant that Vetroresinas were quite maligned in the early years and were often scrapped and used for motorsport purposes, for which the dry sump version turned out to be very suitable. Almost all Vetroresina bodies have sooner or later fallen victim to commercial market forces in which the external properties of a steel body were sought to make a Vetroresina more attractive to the trade. That was, and still can only be achieved if you level the typical wafer-thin Scaglietti bodywork with substantial amounts of filler and/or corrective filler. There is simply nothing to dent on polyester. However, it is precisely that light, thin body, which can be pressed with a little finger, that makes a Vetroresina so unique. Precisely this feature testifies to the difference between this rare pre-series 308 Ferrari and its sleeker and heavier successors. Now, with advancing insight, we know that exclusivity and rarity derive their right to exist from authenticity and individuality. And, as always, that same progressive insight also puts logical comments on many things done that are called “top restorations” from which there is no way back. That is why we understand and appreciate the philosophy of the artist behind this Ferrari and we are happy with this special automotive historical enrichment in our collection. The body skin of this Vetroresina is uncompromisingly thin and flexible. The concept of “originality” is often at odds with a need for perfection, but in this setting we believe it is a wonderful exception that offers the opportunity to experience a Vetroresina in its purest form. This Ferrari EU 308 Vetroresina becomes increasingly exciting the more you look at it and understand its unique potential. There is a lot of accompanying first-hand background information and documentation about this car and the way in which it has been restored to is current state.
