1961 BRISTOL 406 - £49,995
We may not be based in Bristol anymore but our love affair with Bristol cars began when we took over the Brabazon Motors business 5 or so years ago. I used to find them quite odd especially the later big V8 models. However, the earlier cars are really wonderful things and magnificently engineered. I well remember hours spent chatting about Bristol cars with Mr Bristol Cars, Sid Lovesey. Sid began working for Bristol cars in 1947 and he stayed with them through good and bad until 2011. Then he moved to Brabazon Motors which is where I was privileged to meet him. We used to chat about the good old days. Sid could tell a story and he was a wonderful chap to me and passionate in the extreme about these cars.
With absolute fondness and him in mind I bought this super Bristol 406. One of only 8 registered for the road today. The first time I saw the car I knew I would have to buy it and drive it for myself. We have serviced it and made it as best it can be. It is a matching numbers car and drives without fault. The car is an older restoration but carries its age with a wonderful mellow patina. The engine is so smooth and free revving. The gearbox with all synchro 4 speed and overdrive is a delight. The Bristol 406 was a seriously expensive car back in 1961. It was expensive for good reason. Fast, smooth, sophisticated, beautifully engineered and exclusive. All those characteristics apply today.
In the cabin, the Reuter seats have very rare headrests. Its a comfortable place to sit. The cabin is a heady mix of leather, wood, switches and gauges. A blend of quality and functionality.
Out on the open road the 406 responds to throttle pick up without delay and accelerates freely. These engines where often used in race cars and you can see why. The gearbox snicks from gear to gear and then when you reach a cruising 70mph you can just flick the overdrive and cruise. Back on the windy lanes the car is reassuring and gives positive feedback to the driver. Need to stop quickly and the 406 does that too.
All in all in a really fantastic drive. A truly wonderful piece of English engineering from the hand of Sid Lovesey.
There is a substantial history file with the car and the car comes with a fresh MOT and on the button
