Mitchell Motors near Salisbury, long standing Bristol experts, built this fine Bristol with the owner from the remnants of a standard 401, completing the work in about 2004. Andrew Mitchell, Spencer Lane-Jones and other specialists have maintained and fettled the car since. In the large history file are details of the build, invoices and notes of the ongoing and thorough maintenance, and correspondence with DVLA ensuring that the 401 was correctly registered. The car is a two seater drophead and has a 1960 Bristol 2.2 litre engine from an AC Greyhound and Bristol 406 front and rear axles which have disc brakes. The gearbox, which was overhauled in 2015, now has a J type overdrive fitted. The engine was rebuilt by Nicson, a race engineering shop in Poole, and converted for unleaded petrol. It is rated at about 125 bhp. The stainless steel exhaust was constructed by Quicksilver to AC Ace specification. An alloy radiator is fitted. Weather gear includes a full hood and tonneau in mohair, sidescreens and wind deflectors. This special car bears a passing resemblance to a factory 402, but is unique and has the benefit of the upgraded running gear. It has covered in the region of forty thousand miles since build, including many trips to the Le Mans Classic and competing in the VSCC Pomeroy Trophy at Silverstone. The Bristol makes a fine touring car with its improved engine, gearbox and brakes (and extra heater!), and remains in fine order throughout. Light cosmetic fettling in recent years had ensured that the ccar is still in beautiful condition. This 401 looks very stylish in its two seater, Roadster form. We answer all enquiries.
