2000 BMW R80 - £8,000
This custom build features a fully rebuilt engine with new barrels, pistons, valves, guides, and bearings, finished in wrinkle-finish matte black and coated externally in Kal-Gard/Gun Kote — a military-grade, heat-dispersing finish known for its extreme durability. The frame has been stripped of all unnecessary brackets and powder coated in satin black, with new fork stanchions, rebuilt calipers, replacement brake discs, a new rear shock, and all bearings replaced throughout. A custom single seat, modified from an original BMW unit and upholstered in premium leather, sits above a recessed, hidden battery with an adjustable mounting plate using a compact Motobatt MBTX4U. The 18″ wheels are paired with modified 20″ reproduction mudguards from Armours of Bournemouth, trimmed and mounted to suit the build’s proportions and clearance. Modern touches include Motogadget bar-end indicators, a Trail Tech digital speedo, a compact 4.5″ German-sourced headlight, and CNC-machined titanium fork tops. Finishing details include a custom rear rack, checker plate tank knee pads finished in Kal-Gard, and hand-machined strap hooks, screws, and washers, all contributing to the bike’s refined yet rugged aesthetic. The BMW R80 Scrambler finds its roots in the legendary BMW R series — a line of air-cooled boxer twins that have become synonymous with reliability, longevity, and unmistakable design. Originally introduced in 1980, the R80 was part of the /7 generation and was known for its 797cc flat-twin engine, shaft drive, and bulletproof engineering. It gained a loyal following among touring riders and commuters alike, offering a smooth, torquey ride and ease of maintenance that became hallmarks of BMW’s boxer bikes. The “Scrambler” concept, however, is not a factory designation but rather a custom reinterpretation. It draws inspiration from the off-road-capable motorcycles of the 1960s and ‘70s — bikes that were stripped down for simplicity, fitted with knobby tires, high-mounted exhausts, and reinforced suspensions. When applied to the BMW R80, the Scrambler style brings a rugged, minimalist aesthetic to the classic boxer platform. Builders began adapting R80s into Scramblers for their strong frame, air-cooled engine, and timeless proportions, making them ideal candidates for custom transformation. Over the years, the R80 Scrambler has evolved into a cult favorite among custom builders and enthusiasts. Whether it’s a garage-built one-off or a professionally crafted showpiece, the R80 Scrambler blends vintage character with modern touches — a tribute to the past with the soul of a true adventurer.
