The BMW Isetta is one of the most iconic microcars of the 1950s, instantly recognizable for its unusual egg-shaped body and distinctive front-opening door. Originally designed by the Italian company Iso SpA, the Isetta was licensed by BMW in 1954. At the time, BMW was struggling financially, and the Isetta offered an affordable solution to Germany's growing demand for small, economical vehicles in the post-war era. Its compact size, low running costs, and quirky styling quickly made it a success. The car's design is unconventional compared to most automobiles. Instead of side doors, the entire front panel—including the steering wheel and dashboard—swings outward to allow access for driver and passenger. Its bubble-like form, large windows, and minimal footprint made it practical for city driving and parking on crowded European streets. The Isetta could seat two adults comfortably, with just enough room behind the seats for small luggage or groceries. Power came from a single-cylinder, four-stroke engine derived from BMW's motorcycle line. Early models featured a 247cc engine, producing around 12bhp. This modest output was enough to propel the lightweight car to a top speed of about 50 miles per hour (80 km/h). Fuel economy was one of its strongest selling points, often reaching over 50 miles per gallon, which was particularly appealing during a time when efficiency was more important than performance.

This BMW 600 requires restoration, although we are advised everything is correct and present with the vehicle. The knowledgeable vendor is only selling the car as he is moving house and will no longer be able to store it. Although the paintwork may look a little sad, this Isetta 600 is actually quite a sound vehicle. Mechanically these are not complicated cars; most competent DIY mechanics can attend to them, and parts are in plentiful supply via various Owners Clubs. Supplied with a V5 registration document, the BMW Isetta remains a beloved collectors' car, admired not only for its quirky charm but also for the pivotal role it played in BMW's survival and growth.
