The latest online-only European auction from RM Sotheby’s closed for bidding on 22 July, making a cool £7.4 million in total sales. It attracted bidders from 41 countries, and unsurprisingly was topped by a Ferrari.
It was the second online-only European-based held by RM Sotheby’s, and was topped by the 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Alloy by Scaglietti (above), which was part of the Richoz Collection. The car was what RM Sotheby’s says is, ‘a highly desirable specification of this much sought-after Ferrari model, and was delivered new to Switzerland where it has remained throughout its life.’ Final price was €1,430,000 (£1,292,790).
Another big seller was the 1985 Lancia Delta S4 (b, which went under the hammer and achieved €770,000 when bidding closed. Storied Group B cars are now the hottest property, and this one is a great example of that having been driven by Finnish drivers Markku Alén and Ilkka Kivimäki in Martini colours.
Maarten ten Holder, Head of Europe, RM Sotheby’s, said: ‘Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, our business has had to adapt to new ways of connecting buyers and sellers of rare and exquisite machinery. Surpassing €8m in sales is a good result and the market continues to demonstrate resilience during the difficult year for the global economy.’
