Historics celebrated 10 years in business on 18 July with its first ‘live’ classic auction since lockdown started . The summer event was packed with 181 entries – and in the end, 140 sold successfully, making it a £6.1m sale, and the highest-ever grossing sale for Historics.

Staged at a picturesque 100-acre lakeside site in Datchet, Berkshire, the sale sees the auctioneer maintain its focus on live auctions. Any concerns about the pandemic causing problems in a live sale were laid to rest, as social distancing measures were fully implemented and respected during the event.

A spokesperson for Historics commented, ‘there copious competitive bidding in the hall and online and by telephone, and the new site, Windsorview Lakes, Datchet, Berks was a great success and suited the prevailing conditions well Atmosphere was very buoyant and friendly.’ He added, ‘somebody remarked it was ‘like a garden party - only needed the Pimms’.

Lots of bidders registered – and they were competitive

Extending viewing to four days proved extremely popular with a strong uptake each day, encouraging 806 online registrations to bid. This is greater than the pre-Covid-19 numbers at the last Historics sale. The sale rate as of Sunday was 77%, with further provisional sales being negotiated.

Unsurprisingly, the most prevalent marque at the sale was Jaguar – the evergreen choice of the classic car market. Of the 26 Jaguars entered for the sale, 22 sold (85%), including nine E-types from 1965-1974. There was also a 71% sale rate of 10 Aston Martins, including two DB5s. A Spyker LM85 soared to £224,000, against an estimate of £130,000-£160,000.

Also making news was the first Morgan Aero 8 entered at a Historics auction, which powered well above its top estimate (£28,000-£33,000) making £52,640. A beautifully-restored 1972 Triumph TR6 (above) achieved what is significant money at £57,732 (£28,000-£35,000), while the modern classic poster boy, the Ford Focus RS (a 2010 model, below) smashed its pre-sale estimate of £32,000-£38,000 to £56,560 on the hammer.

Finally, the Volvo 144 endurance rally car we featured in the sale preview went for £10,018. The owner donated the sale proceeds to University College London Hospital’s charity after they saved his life from Covid-19.
