AUDI 80 GT - £30,000
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, Online Auction - 14th August on Thursday the 14th of August. SummaryA rare and historically significant 1975 Audi 80 GT in Rally Yellow, believed to be the sole surviving right-hand drive example in this colour. Owned since 1987 and the subject of an exhaustive nut and bolt restoration spanning decades. A rolling road-tune, after careful running-in of the rebuilt engine, showed the bhp and torque figures were spot on. Extensively documented, with magazine coverage in Classic, Retro and Modern (October 2021) and a restoration story that sets it apart. Background:The Audi 80 GT was launched in 1974 as the performance variant of the award-winning B1-series 80. With its 1,588cc engine delivering 99bhp and paired with a twin-choke Solex carburettor, the GT bridged the gap between practicality and spirited driving. Featuring MacPherson struts up front, trailing arms at the rear and a kerb weight of just 855kg, the 80 GT offered lively handling and accessible performance. Unique features included alloy wheels, ventilated front discs, a larger finned sump, plus a sports interior. Produced for less than two years, very few found their way to the UK – fewer still survive. The Car:First registered in late 1975, this Audi 80 GT (registration JWS 405P) is believed to be the only surviving example in Rally Yellow with right-hand drive. Owned by the current keeper since 1987, the car was laid up shortly after purchase and remained off the road for over two decades. A full, bare-metal restoration was eventually undertaken, including a comprehensive engine rebuild, new body panels, interior retrim and mechanical overhaul. The work was carried out to an exceptional standard with close attention to authenticity, and only two deviations from factory specification – upgraded front seats from an early 80 Quattro, visually identical but offering improved support, and a brand new Weber carburettor, which provides more reliable running and starting than the original Solex. The engine was rebuilt by specialists in Bristol and rolling road-tuned following careful running-in, confirming power and torque figures in line with original specification. The mechanicals were fully refreshed, with new bushes, bearings, brakes and suspension components sourced through an extensive network of suppliers and Audi enthusiasts. The car retains much of its original specification, including a tinted windscreen with darker top band – a very lucky find – while every other piece of glass remains original. The interior was retrimmed in cloth closely matched to the original, with a perfect donor dashboard fitted in place of the cracked original. Paintwork in Rally Yellow is virtually flawless, with panel fit and body lines reflecting the quality of the rebuild. The restoration was completed in 2018 and the car has been back on the road for the past seven years, attending numerous shows and classic car runs. In 2021, the car was the subject of a feature article in Classic, Retro and Modern magazine, documenting its remarkable restoration journey. A copy of the magazine is included. Recent work by marque specialists UKD Auto included:• Complete fluid and belt service• Fuel tank removal and resealing• Brake system setup• Electrical system check and correction Documentation includes:• Extensive history file with invoices from the restoration• Old-style 'buff' logbook• Original instruction book wallet and service record• Original sales brochure and pamphlet• Period newspaper advert from 1987• Photographs and magazine feature Various new/old stock items and spares will also accompany the car. This Audi has remained in long-term ownership for 37 years and has spent most of its life in dry storage.
