1962 ASTON MARTIN DB4 SERIES 4 - £POA
The Aston Martin DB4 Series 4 is part of the lineage that helped shape Aston Martin's legacy as a manufacturer of elegant, high-performance GT cars. Introduced in the late 1950s, the DB4 laid the foundation for future icons like the DB5 and DB6. Here's a detailed look into the story and history behind the DB4 Series 4, which was produced in a specific phase of the DB4's evolution. The DB4: A New Era for Aston Martin Debut: The Aston Martin DB4 debuted at the 1958 Paris Motor Show. Significance: It was a ground-up redesign and the first Aston Martin fully developed under David Brown's ownership. Coachwork: The DB4 was the first model built at the Newport Pagnell factory and featured Italian design influence with coachwork by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan using their lightweight Superleggera (super lightweight) construction method. Series Evolution The DB4 went through five series of updates between 1958 and 1963. The Series 4 sits close to the end of this evolution and was produced from September 1961 to October 1962. DB4 Series 4: Key Features and Historical Context Production Period Late 1961 – Late 1962 Distinguishing Features Front Grille: The Series 4 introduced a vertical-bar front grille that was more similar to the grille of the later DB5, moving away from the egg-crate style used earlier. Bonnet Scoop: The bonnet scoop became more recessed, giving a cleaner, sleeker appearance. Tail Lamps: Tail lights were now separate units rather than integrated, and indicator lenses became more squared off. Interior and Minor Trim Tweaks: Minor improvements were made for comfort and refinement. Engine and Performance Engine: 3.7-liter all-alloy inline-6 engine designed by Tadek Marek. Power Output: Typically around 240 bhp in standard form. 0–60 mph: Around 8.5 seconds. Top Speed: Approx. 140 mph. This engine was a major leap in performance and durability, replacing the older W.O. Bentley-designed unit used in the DB2 series. Variants of the Series 4 DB4 GT: Lightweight, high-performance variant with twin spark plugs and uprated tuning (very rare). Vantage Version: Optional Vantage-spec engine, with larger valves and higher compression ratio. Convertible: Only a few Series 4 DB4 Convertibles were built, making them exceptionally rare. Legacy and Influence The DB4 is often overshadowed by the DB5, which became iconic through James Bond. However, it was the DB4 that set the design and engineering blueprint. The Series 4 is considered one of the most refined and well-balanced versions before the final Series 5, which introduced longer bodies and eventually led to the DB5. Collectibility Today, the DB4 Series 4 is a highly desirable classic: Valued for its transitional aesthetics, bridging early DB4 lines with the emerging DB5 look. Collectors appreciate the combination of classic design, Italian styling, and British engineering. Prices reflect its rarity and significance in the DB line. This Aston Martin DB4 Series 4 is quite special and totally unique, its NOT just a standard DB4 Series 4, No its a well constructed and thought about car with so many nice to have extras, which enhance the car so well in so many ways. The car was purchased through JD Classics in the good years and totally restored, but with the special requirements by the enthusiastic owner who wanted the car to be specifically perfect. During the nut and bold restoration, the engine was up-graded to 4.2 litre, unleaded specification with triple Weber carburettors, by Aston Engineering. With enhanced suspension and brakes and wider wheels and tyres with Borrani wheel spinners. The rear wheel arches have been flared slightly to clear tyres. A modified Limited Slip Axle was prepared. Nice to have electronic power steering with a slightly smaller steering leather steering wheel. Within the re-trim the car was fitted with air conditioning and discreet music system and retractable colour coded seat belts. This is one unique Aston Martin DB4 in excellent and concours condition, one not to miss or pass by. When only the best will do.
