Classic car rally brings in the crowds in Aberdeen

Petrolheads braved some bad weather on Sunday (June 6th) to catch a glimpse of a range of classic cars at an event in Aberdeen.

Hundreds of people were queuing outside long before the start of the 19th instalment of the Fraserburgh Vintage Car Rally, the Press and Journal reports.

The main attraction was a Ford Escort RS1800, which was driven to victory in the 1980 Scottish and Mintex Rally by Finnish pair Hannu Mikkola and Ari Vatanen.

In addition, attendees were able to see a JCB Hillman Hunter which competed in events such as the 1970 London to Mexico and 1993 London to Sydney endurance rallies.

"We had people showing up at 11:00 BST keen to get started. From that moment, it was bustling, which is always very rewarding to see," organiser James Gray told the news provider.

"Though the weather reports had put a few folk off, we had over 40 late entries on the day. There was a steady flow of people throughout the afternoon."

Vatanen drove the RS1800 to the World Rally Championship title in 1981 while competing as a privateer.
