Arriving in 1934, the PA was the first of MGs P-Series. As the successor to the J-Type, the PA inherited its OHC 847cc engine from the 1928 Morris Minor and the Wolseley 10 as well as its predecessor, but had a strengthened chassis, half-elliptic springs and rigid axles. Most models were two seat tourers, but a small number of Airline coupés and four seaters were also produced.
The Q-Type was a true race car, manufactured by MG solely in 1934. It is understood that only eight or nine units were built and in the hands of George Harvey-Noble, one example achieved 122mph around the track at Brooklands, aided by a particular crankshaft and a Zoller supercharger.
It is of little wonder then that an MG of the same era may find itself clothed in the livery of a now exceptionally rare and highly desirable Q-type.
MG distributors University Motors Ltd originally supplied this particular PA in chassis form on the 30th of June 1934 to MG dealers Parkinson and Polson Ltd of Eastbourne. The first owner, Miss F. A. Rolls, instructed the dealership to fit a drophead coupe body to the chassis, numbered PA 0760. As is often the case, with the ravages of time the original body was deemed beyond repair in the 1990s, so the decision was made to construct a new aluminium body. The fact that JK 3699 left the factory as a rolling chassis gave the then owner a free hand as to the choice of body and a Q-Type style was decided on, with the correct style cycle wings for road use. The motor car is equipped with racing petrol and radiator quick release filler caps and a full set of correct competition instrumentation. A major rebuild of the engine, which included the fitting of a new crankshaft and conrods, was carried out in 2008 by Len Bull, a well-known specialist in the pre-war world of racing MGs. A special order stainless steel exhaust system is fitted and the electrics have been checked, replaced or overhauled as necessary and a new wiring loom installed.
This purposeful looking sporting MG is fitted with aero screens and is supplied with a tonneau cover. In well-cared for condition, we understand that the motor car has been used sparingly since its restoration; the Q-Type is certainly ready to be enjoyed and would no doubt make an excellent competition car.
The history file contains the RF60 registration book, a V5 document and the V5C registration certificate, together with a wiring diagram, invoices and correspondence.
