Artcurial certainly pulled in the punters to an almost five hour Paris sale in the Theatre du Rond-Point just off the Champs-Elysees last Monday night, when 81 or 89% of voitures were sold for a more than healthy €8.7m (£7.4m), over €2m above the pre-sale estimate. Most significantly, too, 60% of the 91 cars been consigned at no reserve and 13 of them sold to Eastern Europe, whilst buying bids were received remotely from as far afield as Russia and the US. Once again an E Type Jag topped the auction prices with a IOM registered 1996 Series 1 - the running gear if which had started life in a FHC, but which had been re-housed in a new Roadster monocoque with hardtop - fetching £56,105 with premium at Sandown Park, just over Barons’ lower estimate. During 16 years of vendor ownership, the still cosmetically sharp motor car had been treated to various enhancing upgrades including 5-speed Getrag all-synchromesh box, electro-hydraulic power steering and MkX discs with Coopercraft calipers and more potent brake servo. Whilst the 1953 Ferrari 340/375MM Berlinetta ‘Competizione’ sold during Villa D’Este weekend by RM for 9,856,000 euros (£8,377,600) smashed three new auction records – highest price for model, record for closed-roof ‘Berlinetta’ Ferrari and highest priced car sold at auction 2012/13 season to date – several other market-significant valuations for non-Ferrari makes were also established beside Lake Como in the rainy season.
