TRIUMPH DOLOMITE - £8,000
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, Online Auction - 31st July on Thursday the 31st of July. BackgroundThe Dolomite Sprint was launched at the 1973 Earls Court Motor Show as the sporty variant of Triumph’s ever-popular Dolomite. While the standard Dolomite and the Sprint shared the same platform, the Sprint featured numerous upgrades. Mechanically, it benefited from an overhead camshaft (SOHC) 2-litre engine producing 127bhp, a near 30bhp increase over the standard 1.8-litre Dolomite, enabling 0–60mph in 8.5 seconds. Handling was more performance-oriented, with independent front suspension and a revised live rear axle. Aesthetically, the Sprint boasted a sportier appearance with a more aggressive stance and the all-important ‘Sprint’ badging. During the seven year production run between 1973 and 1980, records show 22,941 Sprints were produced — though sadly, a large number have since succumbed to chronic rust and now reside in the scrapyard in the sky. Series 4 models are considered more desirable and are notably rarer, with only 834 produced during the model’s lifetime. These later cars benefited from detailed improvements, most notably dual-circuit brakes and a speedometer calibrated in clearer 20mph increments. A driver’s door mirror and rear fog light were also made mandatory from 1st January 1980 to comply with new regulations. The CarRolling off the production line in 1980, we have on offer a very presentable example of the increasingly popular Dolomite Sprint. Powered by its original 2-litre, 16-valve inline-four engine, the world’s first mass-produced multi-valve unit and mated to a slick 4-speed manual gearbox with overdrive, this example remains faithful to its celebrated 1970s roots, offering lively performance and at the time, family practicality. As the first production car from British Leyland to come standard with alloy wheels, this example features a timeless set of 13" alloys, fitted with four relatively new tyres that still have ample tread remaining. The vendor notes that the paintwork is a little tired and may benefit from some attention to make it immaculate, but the car is totally usable as-is. If you’re seeking a great entry-level classic and don’t mind a few blemishes, this could be the ideal candidate. The interior presents very well in beige cloth, with the vendor stating that everything should function as it ought to. The car comes with a comprehensive history file documenting its provenance over its 45 year life. In summary, this is a rare opportunity to acquire one of Britain’s true unsung heroes of the sports saloon era. With its motorsport pedigree, distinctive styling and engaging drive, the Dolomite Sprint continues to attract both collectors and driving enthusiasts. This Cherry Red example is a true enthusiast’s car and ready to be enjoyed. Location: WarwickshireSeller: PrivatePhotos: Professional
