The first Porsche to be designed solely as a roadster since the 914, the Boxster, released in 1996 and known internally as the 986, has been enjoying increasing popularity in recent years. The original Boxster marked a turning point for Porsche, who needed a commercial upswing in order to remain viable. After consultation with Toyota in the early 1990s, the decision was made to implement greater parts sharing across models. As a result, many Boxster components - namely the bonnet, front wings, headlights, interior and engine architecture - were utilised in the 996 generation of the 911, introduced a year later in 1997.
