Few cars in Porsche’s history have disrupted the status quo like the 918 Spyder did upon its debut at the 2013 Frankfurt International Motor Show. Its revolutionary plug-in hybrid powertrain—with electric motors powering the front axle and a conventional V-8 driving the rear—was a huge leap forward, not only in efficiency, but also in its ability to enthrall drivers. There is nothing quite like leisurely and silently pulling away in full-electric mode, only to hear the race-bred V-8, with its flat-plane crankshaft, titanium connecting rods, and dry-sump lubrication, bark to life, bellowing under full acceleration to a 9,000-rpm redline. The wonderfully raucous sound conjures images of piloting the Porsche RS Spyder LMP2 Le Mans prototype, whose very engine served as the basis for the 918 Spyder’s.

The entire experience is both utterly incongruous and supernaturally seamless, creating an astounding new paradigm for high-performance motoring. Self-adjusting aerodynamic aids—including a massive rear wing and flaps in the undercarriage and nose—allow for timeless and beautifully subdued carbon fiber bodywork that will remain timeless. In short, everything about the 918 Spyder exudes an effortless excellence, and this is perhaps what most sets it apart from fellow plug-in hybrid hypercars, the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1.

“It’s a more tightly briefed car, more controlled and, arguably, more far-reaching in its abilities,” wrote the Top Gear staff in their review. “The 918 Spyder has such huge capability in so many areas: it really will average 30 mpg, it’s knife-edge sharp on a track, able to scare the living wotsits out of you, it dazzles passers-by, dawdles through town silently and howls through the countryside. And if the weather’s kind, you can take the roof panels out and pop them under the bonnet.”

With a total output of 887 horsepower and 994 pound-feet of torque, the 918 Spyder’s numbers were impressive when new, and they remain so today: 0 to 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds—faster than both the P1 and LaFerrari—and a top speed of 211 mph.

The example offered here is number 308 of the 918 total produced. Importantly, it is one of just 35 918 Spyders designated for the Canadian market. Acquired in essentially as-delivered by the Dare to Dream Collection, just its second owner from new, it has been driven just 3,515 kilometers (~2,184 miles) from new as of cataloguing time. The stunning Liquid Metal Silver exterior over Onyx Black leather with Acid Green piping is appropriately subdued, perfectly aligned with the car’s engineering ethos.

This 918 Spyder was fitted with a number of desirable factory options from new, including carbon-fiber roof panels, side mirrors and rear wing, carbon fiber interior package, front-axle lift system, 25-foot charging cable, HomeLink system, electric comfort heating, multi-function sport steering wheel in Alcantara, stone guards, cup holder, seat pad for the lightweight bucket seats, and its key painted to match the body color. The extended carbon fiber rear diffuser, as found on Weissach-package-equipped 918 Spyders, has been fitted on this car using correct factory parts. In 2016, the front-axle lower trailing arm was replaced under recall and paint protection film was applied to the front bumper and hood.

A pristine, well-maintained, and sparingly driven example of Porsche’s highly coveted hybrid-electric hypercar, this showroom-condition 918 Spyder has much to recommend it—whether sought as a collection piece or to enjoy its wide and rewarding performance envelope, from leisurely jaunts to intense track days.
