The legendary M’Type MG Midget was the first fruit of Morris Garages venture into making sports cars based on Morris underpinnings. Although later Morris Minors of the 1930s used the rather less sophisticated sidevalve engine, The M’Type featured the Minor’s original 847cc overhead camshaft engine, producing about 20 horsepower and were based on a lowered version of the Minor’s chassis. This was a popular early light sports car manufactured between 1929 and 1931. The model competed in both the Le Mans 24hour race and the Brooklands ‘Double Twelve'. Over 3000 such cars were built. This example represents a total rebuild with a new wood-framed body. We are told that the car was in the reserve collection of the Myreton Motor Museum located near Aberdaly in East Lothian, Scotland. Established in 1966 by motoring enthusiast Willie Dale, the museum showcases a diverse collection of cars from as far back as 1899. An MG enthusiast restored the MG and the car has been used sparingly since the recent complete rebuild. The engine features a ‘Double Twelve' camshaft, a Club Crank, and the more useable Wolseley Hornet 4-speed gearbox with a Derrington remote gear change. It is a superb, lively car to drive and has both a tonneau cover, hood and hood frame. A centrifugal advance distributor is fitted and flashing indicators in period lights have been fitted for safety. Over the years we've encountered several OHC MG cars where the charging system had suffered oil contamination in the vertically mounted camshaft-driven dynamo. In this case, the charging system, like everything else works perfectly. It is a superb little car and as a fully restored example represents great value for money.
