The Mercedes-Benz R129 models were produced from 1989 through to 2001 and were sold under the 'SL-Class' model names. The R129 was based on the shortened floor pan of the Mercedes-Benz W124 saloon and featured many innovative details seen for the time. For example, electronically controlled shock absorbers (optional) and a hidden, automatically extending roll-over bar. The level of standard equipment was high, with electrically operated windows, mirrors, seats and convertible hood.

Built to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Stirling Moss' win in the 1955 Mille Miglia road race, the R129 Mille Miglia was available as either a 320 SL or 500 SL. It could only be ordered in Brilliant Silver metallic, equipped with Evo II six-spoke polished alloys and a red and black leather interior, complemented by carbon-fibre trim. The lower wing grilles were also given a unique 'chequered flag' treatment that, upon close inspection, is a clever collection of chrome squares.

Finished in Brilliant Silver with contrasting black and red leather interior, the Mille Miglia Special Edition 320 SL on offer here presents beautifully boasting climate control, hardtop, full electric power roof, roll over bar, wind deflector and heated and electric seats. A rare example, this is one of 40 limited edition cars with two former keepers, it has 12 stamps in its service book, the majority coming from main agent Mercedes-Benz dealers, and the rest by renowned M&Y Autos in High Wycombe. The car has been in long term ownership with our vendor owning the car since 1999, when he paid £36,500 for it. Having covered less than 27,000 miles under his ownership and less than 2,000 miles in the last five years, ill health has led to the decision to find the car a new home. The bodywork isn't perfect, with room for improvement, but to find a well maintained, low mileage, low ownership example fitted with the very rare AMG rear spoiler presents a unique opportunity.
