Mercedes-Benz held a meeting, during which the participants discussed, among other things, a new model and how Mercedes could increase their sales in the American market. At that time, Mercedes had the 180 with four doors in production. The idea was to use this model as a basis for a convertible variant. One specific participant in this meeting was anything but convinced. This person was Hoffman, the Mercedes-Benz importer for the United States. He proposed using the 300 SL Gullwing as a basis because he had a clear vision about the American public and their needs. If the new model could even come close to this spectacular model, then Mercedes might have a chance to increase their sales in the United States. Unfortunately, we were not present at this meeting, but according to experts, it was decided at that time to present a prototype of a Mercedes-Benz roadster during the 1954 exhibition in New York. Automotive journalists and other interested parties praised this prototype, encouraging Mercedes to proceed with production. In 1955, the 190 SL Roadster appeared at the Geneva Motor Show, and the rest is more or less history. Unbeknownst at the time, Mercedes had set the tone for their roadsters.
