Building on the success of the limited-production S500, in 1964 Honda launched the S600. Initially only available as a roadster, a fastback coupe would soon follow. The S600 was powered by a 57-horsepower, 606-cubic-centimeter dual-overhead-cam inline four-cylinder engine fueled by four Keihin carburetors, and capable of revving to an impressive 9,500 rpm redline. The engine was backed by a four-speed manual gearbox which sent power through a hypoid differential to the rear wheels via chain final drives for each wheel. The S600 featured an independent front and rear suspension and offered rack-and-pinion steering for a true sportscar experience. S600s left the factory with finned aluminum drum brakes and rode on 13-inch wheels. The two body styles were offered in two trim levels, Standard and Special; Standards were called the S600 and Specials were called the SM600.
The S600 would become Honda’s first mass-market car, offering a right-hand drive or left-hand drive configuration; it was also the first Honda car sold in Europe. The S600 would remain in production through 1966 during which time it is believed that 11,284 convertibles and 1,800 coupes were built.
This 1965 Honda S600 is presented in a sporty shade of red with beautiful accenting chrome trim. It features a fender-mounted driver’s side mirror and rides on thin whitewall tires with factory wheel covers. The engine bay is nicely detailed with the quad Keihin carburetors on prominent display. The interior is equipped with Denso instrumentation, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, a radio, black bucket seats with contrasting red lap belts, and a set of Coco Mats. Prior to acquisition by the Dare to Dream Collection, it was restored by the renowned Rudy and Company of British Columbia, resulting in the truly wonderful condition in which it presents today.
Over the years Honda has built a special brand covering a wide variety of manufacturing with a loyal and dedicated following. This S600 represents one of their first car models that caught on globally, and one that has more recently developed a cult following. This is surely one of the finest restored examples of this unique, charming, and fun-to-drive Honda available anywhere.
