Background/ The Item: In the late 1950s, Enzo Ferrari's right-hand man, Enzo Monari, a skilled craftsman, began building model cars for children as a hobby. These models were meticulously crafted and often, they were made upon the request of Ferrari customers as gifts for their children. Initially, Monari produced two aluminium models - the Testa Rossa (TR) in 1957 and a pedal car, the Ferrari Shark. Enzo Ferrari gave his friend the opportunity to call the models 'Ferrarina' meaning 'little Ferrari'. As Monari became more and more busy, he handed over the miniature car project to two friends, Igino Manicardi and Oscar Messori, two craftsmen who made exhausts for Ferrari and Maserati. The Man-Mes (Manicardi and Messori) company from Modena had to change the name of its cars, renaming them from 'Ferrarina' to 'Letizia'. The company produced the 0.3 PT (Piccolo Turismo) from the mid 1960s until 1976. The car featured a fiberglass body and an aluminium chassis, with power coming from an electric motor capable of reaching 12kph. The price of this model in the mid 1960s was $486 for the American market, which was a hefty sum at the time.Included in the sale is the April 2000 issue of Road & Track, which features an article about the Ferrarina Letizia 0.3 PT. Summary: The 'Little Ferrari', a true collectable item or even the perfect miniature companion car for a younger family member of any discerning classic car enthusiast. Right in time for Christmas!
