With the introduction of a moving assembly line in 1913, Henry Ford famously turned his Model T into the world's first mass made car. A year later, Model Ts represented 56% of all automobile manufacture in the USA at 308,162 units. However, it was not just the sheer volume of Model Ts rolling off the production line that motorised America, it was the inherent quality of the design. Launched in 1908, the T's chassis and mechanical components were made from exceptionally durable, high-grade vanadium steel. The Ford also featured a compact 2890cc, side valve, four-cylinder engine that pioneered the use of a detachable cylinder head. Developing 23hp at a leisurely 1,600rpm and 80lbft of torque, it was mounted in unit with the clutch and two-speed epicyclic gearbox assembly. Top speed was limited to around 45mph depending upon bodywork, whiles brakes operated on both the transmission and the rear wheels. With a 100" wheelbase, 10" ground clearance and transverse leaf-sprung suspension, the T was perfectly adapted to unmade roads.
This very good 1914 Ford Model T Tourer was imported to the UK in November 1983. Purchased by the vendor in 2011 from a Ford dealership where it was on display in their showroom, he bought it to add to his fleet of cars to be used in film and television productions. This car has featured in television series such as Peaky Blinders, Downton Abbey, Mr Selfridge and in the film Lady Chatterley's Lover. It was also the lead car in the film 1917. This Model T has recently been fitted with a high-powered electric starter motor and the lights have been upgraded to electric lighting. It features a side mounted spare tyre, bulb horn, a klaxon and has a speedo driven from the offside front wheel hub. This very well-maintained Ford is finished in the traditional black and supplied with a V5C registration document. A very reliable example which could continue to feature on the silver screen for years to come. Consigned by John Tomlin
