1973 CITROEN DS - £14,500
Citroen DS Super 5
MOT and tax exempt. Cheap historic classic insurance.
One of the last of the Iconic DS/ID range. This is the DS Super 5. Essentially an ID model that includes the larger and more desirable 2175cc DS21 engine coupled with a 5-speed gearbox. This combination allows better cruising speed and increased fuel economy. A more traditional standard brake pedal is also fitted on this model. The DS is both tax and MOT free. However, the vehicle will come with 12 months MOT.
I bought this vehicle in 2017, because I had never owned one. They are such an iconic vehicle and have awards from all the motoring press for their innovation, style, engineering and driveability. The excellent suspension spheres provided a level of ride comfort unparalleled in a car of that era and still handlek today's pot-hole infested roads with style, grace and suspension efficiency. Power steering. Power brakes.
This DS completed a 'road trip' in 2016, travelling round France on a nostalgic art journey. The last owner seemed very pleased with the performance of the car on the trip. Click the link below to view the diary of the trip, complete with pictures.
My idea was to take it back to France and use it in the summer months. After storing it in my barn in the UK over the 2017 Winter period, early in 2018 I took it to a Classic Citroen dealer in the North West for a general check and some upgrades/repairs/tuning, spending nearly £2000. I then took it back to its home in France and used it there all summer. I returned it to the UK in October last year. I am using it, presently, and enjoying the experience. However, much as I love this car, I have a chance to purchase a non-factory DS Decouvrable ( convertible).
So, let me describe this DS?
It was imported to the UK in 2002 after spending 29 years in France. According to its last French CT ( MOT) on 10/08/1999 the mileage was 21,307 kms. Since being in the UK for 17 years it has covered approximately 27,000 kms , having covered low mileages by its first two UK owners. I cannot guarantee this mileage but many of these classics seem to have low mileages associated with them. I believe it had a couple of periods of inactivity in France before being exported. At present it has done just over 48000 kms NOT miles.
Within the last three years it has had nearly £4000 spent on it including 123 Electronic ignition, new fuel pump, new water pump, new radiator, new suspension spheres all round, new carpets and underlay, new seats, high pressure hydraulic pump, new front end exhaust system, new inertia reel seat belts front and rear, new gear lever gaiter, new suspension gaiters, new front pads, new engine bay fuel hose, new o/s/f bump stop, repairs to the heating system, full service including all fluids. Much of this work was carried out this year. The engine and gearbox are both in very good order. It starts correctly and drives and stops really well on the road. The five speed column change gearbox has been adjusted and works smoothly. New clutch plate, pressure plate, thrust bearing and camshaft oil seal in 2013. I have receipts for all this work. It has never once let me down.
The interior is in very nice order overall. Completely re-furbished front and rear seats that are extremely comfortable. New carpets and underlay sound-proofing. There is a rear screen louvre blind fitted which help prevents potential sun damage to the rear seat tops.
The door cards need a few new clips. There is no radio fitted. I use a Bluetooth speaker and my phone which is simple and works really well. I have two large original Citroen manuals, one a parts and the other a repair manual. I also have a UK handbook.
So what are the not so good points.
Well, the paintwork on the DS looks reasonable from a distance. Photographs look good but can often deceive. It can be happily driven around as is, but the I feel that it has had a rather less than professional respray a while ago and it is now showing up that lack of attention to detail. It was originally beige, but had a colour change after being imported into the UK. There is micro blistering and fading on certain panels. Pit marks on the roof. One door has a small crack in the paintwork. Remedial work has been carried out over time, but certainly not to the standards that the DS deserves. It would clearly benefit from a full respray and if I kept it, I would certainly have that done. I feel the choices are two-fold. One, spend a couple of thousand or so on a simple outer respray that will make this DS into a really nice looking, extremely useable, sound classic. Two, spend a few thousand more on a really top quality bare metal respray incorporating a full strip down and replacement of any components as required. Either option would increase the overall look and value according to the option chosen. The main panels all apppear in serviceable/re-usable condition in the case of a respray. A new paint job would really improve this DS. All the rest of the car has had sensible money spent on it. Please take into account my comments regarding the paint finish, as I do not want to give the impression that the pictures fully represent the deteriorating quality of finish. I have been completely honest about this. As I stated, it can be used as is, but it is certainly not up to standard that the vehicle deserves. The boot lid has had a crack welded but does not shut in a true line up with the wing on one side. This is a relatively easy fix. It really needs two small line-up adjusters fitting.
The power steering rack has been checked and adjusted but has slight wear.
The boot felt soundproofing is worn/absent in places, but is 95% present. I have ordered some replacement and hope to have it fitted soon.
The dashboard clock is present but not operative. The original can be repaired or could be replaced for about £70.00.
I have checked the Chassis and metalwork on the boot, side rails and floor sections. I have had both rear wings off, very simple to do, and investigated the areas revealed (photos taken). The door frame panels are still in their original black and very sound. I have checked the boot area and known areas of concern. As with most vehicles of this era it has has had some remedial work over the years, but is very solid. The chrome work is probably mostly original and is, overall, in good order. Some pitting and slight dulling but very acceptable for a 46 year old. Vehicles of this age are always in need of regular attention, refurbishment and component upgrades.
The DS has had so many accolades heaped upon it. Recently it was voted the most beautifully designed car ahead of the Jaguar E-type. Any money spent on this car would not only benefit the vehicle itself but would also be a great investment for the future. These DS's have also risen in price dramatically over the recent past and with Citroen's Centenary celebrations due this year, 2019, France's most cherished icon will be in even greater demand. Condition A saloons are fetching up to £25,000 and above. There are only 23 Citroen DS21 D models road registered with DVLA in 2017 up from 7 in 1994 (source www.howmanyleft.co.uk ). I am asking a sensible price for a reliable, regularly used low mileage DS. Please note the remarks about the paintwork.
Please contact me through EBay or call if you have any questions at all. I can be contacted on 07545010542. I am a classic enthusiast, not a dealer, with around 40 years of experience. I will answer any queries honestly. Please view the vehicle if you can, although I appreciate this is not always possible but desirable. The DS mileage will rise slightly as I am, as stated previously, using and enjoying it. As I said, the 100th Anniversary is this year. This DS will be a great investment coupled with a great driving/owner experience. A true French classic, in fact probably THE French classic.
Thanks for looking.
