The shimmering grey paintwork is in lovely fresh condition, presenting with a crisp metallic flake throughout. The car was subject to a recent full restoration and as such is free from any signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Early stages of the restorative work included stripping the body shell back to bare metal. Areas showing any signs of age were professionally repaired before a fresh coat of Dolphin Metallic was applied to the exterior, interior, underside, and engine bay.
The car now presents as new, and is finished with an OEM silver/black stripe along both sides. All panels remain perfectly straight and line up just as they should. During the rebuild chrome bumpers were fitted for a more period aesthetic. The aforementioned brightwork was completely re-chromed prior to fitting and now presents with an impeccable mirror finish. The original body-coloured bumpers are still with the vehicle and could easily be changed over by the new keeper if desired.
The time-warp interior presents immaculately throughout and is a real testament to the car's careful ownership from new. The houndstooth sports seats show almost no signs of any wear and the carpets are still protected by the original set of BMW overmats.
The interior also boasts a wonderfully period full Blaupunkt sound system. Travelling to Germany to source the radio components, the current owner was fortunate enough to nd two period amplifiers as well as a 1988 touch screen graphic equalizer, which were all brand new in their boxes. The Woodstock radio/cassette was a top of the range option in 1987, and remains in mint condition following a service.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
At 121k miles the engine was professionally re-built to the spec of a period 2.7-litre E30 Alpina, increasing the horsepower from the factory 172hp to approximately 210hp. The head was ported and polished with a new sports camshaft. The engine was again removed during restoration and was fully refurbished. Most of the ancillaries were new including the alternator, power steering pump, radiator, cooling system, engine sensors, and all gaskets of course. With the extra power a taller LSD ratio of 3.46 was then fitted to ensure smoother, quieter motorway cruising. Lifting the bonnet now reveals a pristine engine bay. The engine upgrades may be subtle in appearance but offer a more lively driving experience than a standard 325i.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The 15-inch Ronal LS alloys look particularly smart, each one finished with a deep polished rim. They are also complete with lockable centre caps. The wheels are shod in a matching set of Continental tyres with minimal wear. Between the spokes you'll find fully refurbished calipers all round with drilled discs at the front. On test the car stops quickly and in a straight line.
The E30 was supplied new by BMW Park Lane's Tourist & Diplomatic Sales Department in London. As an export car it was delivered with red outline number plates (still present) to show it was VAT-free. The car then resided in Germany and was owned by Wing Commander Holland who was an RAF Harrier pilot in the late eighties and early nineties.
The BMW changed hands only a few times and was eventually purchased in 2008 by a friend of the current owner. He treasured the car, and it was under his ownership that it featured in the January 2010 issue of Classic Car World magazine, a copy of which is present in the history file.
The E30 was subsequently purchased in 2014 by the current owner, a submarine engineering officer who has devotedly restored it back to as-new condition. The body shell was stripped back to bare metal and any areas showing signs of weakness were professionally repaired. Following that the entire shell was re-painted in the original colour of Dolphin Metallic; this included the outside, inside, underside, engine bay, and boot. The next two years were spent refurbishing or replacing every component during the rebuild. Seven batches of metal ttings were passivated in yellow zinc to ensure a factory finish and longer lifespan. Further still, every nut and bolt used to rebuild the car was brand new from BMW.
The entire refresh has been carefully undertaken over the last three years, and has cost in excess of £20k. The huge collection of paperwork has filled two of our 4 Star history folders and is complete with an enormous stack of invoices, MOT certificates, dyno readouts, period Blaupunkt documentation, the original BMW document holder with all booklets, 1987 BMW pricelist and model specification leaflets, a 1987 sales brochure, a January 2010 issue of Classic Car World, and a selection of ownership documents from new. There are also over 300 photos documenting various stages of the car's restorative work.
