1970 ALFA ROMEO GIULIA Junior Z - £39,995
History of this car
This delightful Zagato, an early chassis no. 257 was supplied new in Italy in 1970; being an early car, it has the aluminium doors and bonnet.
These haute couture cars were exclusive (1108 made), costing new as much as a GTA. Their light weight (920kgs), aerodynamic shape and more rigid chassis also makes them amongst the very best driving 105 series models.
Our example benefits from a number of upgrades to the non conformist Zagato design, including an in period swap to the desirable 1750cc motor, together with the fitment of genuine Momo Vega 6.5 x 14 magnesium alloy wheels and seats trimmed with corduroy inserts, a trimming style found on some of the better Ferraris of the 1960s.
Chassis 257 found its way to Holland in 1976 where it remained until imported by us into the UK recently. Our car had the one Dutch owner from 1982-2019 and formed part of an important collection of Italian cars.
This Zagato is supplied UK registered with an age related registration.
These Junior Z cars are based on the Spider junior chassis and the bodies were made and painted at the Zagato factory of Terrazzano di Rho. Our car is finished in classic Alfa red, and we believe this to be the cars original colour.
All panels open and shut easily including the rear hatch which opens electrically for ventilation on the move; panel gaps are even and good for one of these cars.
The paintwork has been redone in recent years and presents strongly today, with only a few very minor imperfections. The glass is good and the vertical asymmetric perspex grille, a trademark of the Junior Z, is in excellent condition complete with its Zagato branding.
The rare and valuable genuine Momo Vega wheels wear their original finish and are in good condition, with fresh wheel bolts fitted.
Our car is in good mechanical shape and boasts a 1750cc engine upgrade, with a documented rebuild of the motor 5000klms ago. It is really quite fast certainly much more so than the standard engined Junior Z. The transmission has none of the usual faults and the braking system has been recently rebuilt.
The under bonnet presents beautifully and is well detailed, oils and filters just changed.
Advisory free MOT until October 2020.
This purposeful cabin has recently been refreshed with new carpeting. The seats unique to this model have been partially retrimmed with corduroy inserts, to mimic competition Ferraris of the period. A rather nice leather rimmed Nardi sports steering wheel is also fitted.
This Junior Z makes for a compelling alternative to a ubiquitous GTA replica. If the idea of a unique and fast Zagato appeals, this is your car!
