Sale Statistics
Even though Leominster is many meandering miles from the Motorway network, the final Brightwells sale of the 2009 UK collector vehicle auction season was once again very well attended, reports Richard Hudson-Evans. Top priced seller under the hammer on a Saturday afternoon in the Welsh Marches was a freshly restored 1956 Jaguar XK140 Coupe which raised £51,150, £6150 more than the guide price. The Herefordshire firm also sold a recently repainted 1958 Jaguar XK150SE Fixed Head with triple carb fed 3.8-litre engine for £22,000. Both Jags had always been right-hand drive home market cars.
A London to Brighton Run eligible 1903 Oldsmobile Curved Dash Veteran also did well here, attracting £38,850. A claimed to be largely original 1964 Daimler SP250 C-Spec Dart on wires made £30,360 and a really mint 1963 250 V8 Saloon auto with upgrades £17,160.
A recently chassis-up rebuilt 1951 Bentley MkVI with ‘Big Bore’ 4.6-litre motor found £25,520, a well presented US restored 1941 Buick Super Eight Coupe £22,000, a rare 1955 Swallow Doretti formerly owned by Duncan Rabagliatti £17,600 and a charming 1948 Rover P2 12hp with AP Aircraft of Coventry crafted 4-seater open Tourer coachwork £16,500.
A 1970 Lotus Elan S4 Drophead with chassis replaced during restoration made the required £15,510 and a later type Elan SE Turbo Spyder sold for £8525 had done less than 19,000 miles from new in 1991. A restored 1959 Triumph TR3A raised a more than forecast £16,170, and £7040 bought an always right-hand drive 1974 TR6 and £6600 a former export TR6 from the same year converted to right-hand drive during restoration.
Particularly tidy was a restored 1969 Austin-Healey Sprite MkIV sold for £7810 and an absolutely spotless 1970 Mini Cooper 2380S Mk3 that had been extensively modified for modern tarmac rallying must have cost considerably more than the £7920 paid to restore, let alone prep.
Brightwells next sale for classics takes place at their purpose-built auctions centre just outside Leominster Wednesday 24 March 2010.
