An Austin Maxi that starred at the 1970 World Cup Rally is for sale at £29,500.
The car, registered MCE 7G, was built by Marshall of Cambridge for the event, with parts and help coming from BL Special Tuning at Abingdon.
The car was piloted by the all-lady team of Tish Ozanne, Bronwen Burrell and Tina Kerridge. It made it to Argentina before having to leave the rally after suffering problems – and time penalties – on a muddy road.
On its return to Britain, the Maxi competed in various other events before eventually ending up in Italy.
Present owner Robin Shackleton bought the car around a year ago. “It’s a great car,” says Robin.
“I’d intended to use it for competition, but current legislation means all the stickers would have to be removed and other mods made. I don’t want to do this and have reluctantly decided to sell the car.”
The Maxi is believed to have been repainted about 10 years ago, but retains the lightweight panels fitted to it.
