Morris Motors Ltd of Cowley was proud of its reputation for making motor cars of quality and reliability and the Cowley model has long upheld this. Produced from 1915 with a Bullnose radiator inherited from the Oxford, the models were equipped with a side-valve, four cylinder engine, coupled to a three speed gearbox, which provided fair performance for its era.
This Bullnose was produced in the week commencing the 21st of June 1923, without front wheel brakes which were then added sometime later in the interest of safety. We understand that in all other respects, the Morris remarkably retains its original components, including the Hotchkiss designed engine. We are informed that the motor car was dismantled in approximately 1963; it was purchased by the father-in-law of the current custodian in 1980 and has remained in the same family ever since. Restoration took approximately two years and this we understand included purchasing newly made upholstery for the interior, which had been previously mislaid.
Until a few years ago, the Morris was regularly used, not just for local rallies and events such as the Bristol to Weymouth and the Bristol to Bournemouth runs (successfully completed nine times), but also those on the continent the Cowley ventured over the Channel four times and was even raced twice in the town of Lisieux, winning its class on one occasion! As if these rallies were not impressive enough, the motor car has also been a film star, appearing in the 1992 series The House of Elliot.
The history file includes the V5C registration certificate, the old V5 document, invoices, sundry paperwork, technical data, parts lists and wiring diagrams; the Morris is also supplied with several rally plates, an extra spare wheel, a brass radiator town cap and a petrol can on the running board.
A certain amount of recommissioning has been carried out, but the magneto does require some attention, possibly because of lack of use due to long term storage. The motor car is fitted with a serviceable hood and side screens are provided. New front tyres have been recently fitted and the rear tyres are in good order.
