Classic Mg MGB Car Review

Mg MGB Mg MGB

The MGB, the MGA's replacement, was produced by British Leyland from 1962 and became Britain's best selling sports car. Pininfarina assisted, the MGB's clean design was right first time.

Although the MGB was initially released as a convertible, the range was later extended with the MGB GT and MGB GT V8 (both coupe versions) and with the MGC (a more powerful version of the original roadster MGB). The Rover-built RV8 in the early 90's was also based on the original, MG MGB.

Powered by a four cylinder 1.8L B-series engine which produced 95hp, the MGB was capable of reaching 60mph in 11 seconds, considered relatively swift at the time. This figure was possible due to some new techniques employed by MG in the production of the MGB, including a monocoque chassis which helped reduce weight compared to the methods used by Triumph on their TR series of cars, the main rival of the MGB. As well as a modern chassis, those looking to buy and MGB would also be pleased to know that the car is also equipped with quite modern safety features, it being the one of the first to feature crumple zones.

Over the run of production MG released mk2 and mk3 variants of the MGB roadster; however these variants only contained subtle differences on the original. Some of the additions and alterations made were changes to the floor pan, triple windscreen wipers on U.S models, new grille, revised bumpers and interior alterations. Along with these additions to the original MGB, MG released the MGC, a more powerful sister to the the MGB. The MG MGC was powered by a 2.9L 6 cylinder engine that produced a very respectable 145bhp and could reach 120mph. Externally, only subtle changes were implemented more for necessity rather than pure aesthetics. A power bulge and teardrop were added to the bonnet and the MGC was given larger 15inch wheels. Due to the extra weight the MGC received mixed reviews however it is now, along with the MGB, considered a very collectable classic British sports car.

Production of the MGB was halted in 1980 due to declining sales.

I own a 1964 'pull-handle' MGB Roadster. Great fun to drive with direct, albeit heavy steering and reasonable performance by today's standards. Good roadholding thanks to strongly engineered construction and despite leafspring rear suspension. Simple maintenance with readily available parts - some on an exchange basis - from the likes of MG Hive.
