For sale by auction on Saturday 24thNovember 2012 with Historics at Brooklands, Brooklands Motor Racing Circuit, Weybridge, Surrey.
In 1968, the first muscle cars were, in the opinion of many, moving away from their roots as relatively cheap, fast cars as they gained options. Although Plymouth already had a performance car in the GTX, designers decided to go back to the drawing board and reincarnate the original muscle car concept and in 1968, the low-cost muscle car hit the street. After a tie-in with Warner Brothers, the Road Runner decals were employed both inside and outside the car and the Road Runner was born.
Everything essential to performance and handling was beefed-up and improved. The interior was spartan and the standard engine was an exclusive to the Road Runner, a 383 CID (6.3 Litre) V8 rated at 335bhp. The optional extra in this car is Chrysler's three-speed TorqueFlite automatic with the 1969 variant named 'Motor Trend Car of the Year'.
Presented in orange with a contrasting black interior, this example stands out in many ways; not just because of the exclusive club you join when owning one nor the sheer performance available when driving one. The extraordinary aspect of this matching numbers car is the condition; it is completely original. No restoration work has been undertaken, the paint is worn in places but the state of the body is solid throughout. It is a US west coast car so comes from fine weather, it has the original textured grill, original factory Road Runner decals and indeed so original is this Plymouth that the MOPAR Muscle Association awarded it the 'Most Original' prize this year at Brooklands. Basic service items have been introduced such as new tyres, battery and alternator but the history file is the star prize here. In 1973, it was acquired by a gentleman that meticulously recorded every outing, every mileage change, all work undertaken covering some 26 pages. And if that wasn't enough, also included is the original showroom brochure for the 1969 Plymouth range. A time-warp American classic.
